Liz Cyr PBE Stage 2 1. You are a news reporter for a local news company.

A local lumber company wants to come in and tear down a nearby forest. This forest holds special meaning to you since it has provided agriculture for your family and holds many of your childhood memories. Growing up there you spent much of your time with the animals in their habitat. You are also concerned that their habitats are going to be destroyed. It is up to you to come up with a convincing argument to explain the dangers that could occur if a permit is granted to the lumber company. You must create 1 big poster of what will happen in order to properly show your point of view to the viewers who have the opportunity to provide their vote on whether or not the Lumber Company is granted a permit. (EQ #1 and EQ#2) 2. You are going to create your own childrens movie on reducing your carbon footprint. You are to include scenes that show children reducing their carbon footprint as well as scenes showing positive and negative effects your carbon footprint can have on the environment/ living things. You will share this video with other fourth grade classes. (EQ #2) 3. You are designing your own aquarium. In this aquarium, you will include 7 mock habitats. You must decide what these habitats will contain and what kind of animals you will include in these habitats along with their niche/ job in the community. Guests will then be able to come check out your aquarium! (EQ #3) 4. Hurricane Katrina just hit and you must figure out the proper behavioral and structural adaptations to make in order to get home safely to your family in Virginia. When you get back you will explain to your family what you did in order to get there. (EQ #4)

What other evidence will be collected in light of Stage 1?

Quizzes- There will be 6 quizzes given throughout the unit. The first quiz will be on key terms pertaining to the students positive and negative impacts on the environment and the second quiz will be on terms pertaining to habitats and niches, and the third will be on terms pertaining to behavioral and structural adaptations. Students will have to match definitions and answer fill in the blank/ multiple-choice questions on the terms for the first three quizzes so that students can become more familiar with them. The second three quizzes will go more into depth on the terms and contain scenarios and word problems for the children to solve involving the terms.

Diagram- compare and contrast different animals habitats and niches of several different organisms. Journal- Students will keep a journal on their carbon footprint. They will then reflect on whether each of their actions is having a positive or negative reaction on living things/ the environment and explain why. At the end of each week they will reflect on ways to improve their carbon footprint and why it is important to do so. I will check these once a week to make sure students are on the right track and are providing acceptable ways that they can reduce their carbon foot print. Students Self Assessment and Reflection: ReflectionExit CardsStudents will be given exit cards once a week (at a different time than the selfassessment). They will be given a variety of different questions. Questions will be both content based (to measure their understanding) and others will have them reflect on their learning. Some questions may include: What is one thing that confused you today What is one thing you are confident about that you learned today? What new vocabulary did I learn? Do I understand the new vocabulary? How does the content apply to the larger world? Why is this content important? Students will self-assess on their understating of each PBE in a personal journal. They will fill them out after each PBE. They will write what they have learned, questions they have, and their feelings toward the topic at hand. Self- AssessmentI will have a drop box for comments throughout the unit for student to tell me how they are feeling about the content. I will check the box at the end of each day to make sure my students are on track. I will also have them fill out mandatory selfassessments twice a week to get a better feel of how each student is grasping the material. Questions to be asked: what is one thing I could improve on my work? What are your strengths and weaknesses in your work? What strategy did you use today that assisted in your learning? Did you do you best work today? How do you know?
