Purpose of Visit Observed & Assisted

Description of Visit I observed Mrs. Murray's fourth grade lesson on place value. First Mrs. Murray aligned the Smart Board. Then she began asking probing questions that got them to think. She wrote two similar numbers on the board, and asked the class which number was larger and why. Then she handed the students a guided practice worksheet that the class did together with her help. She allowed students to demonstrate some of the problems on the board. Towards the end of the worksheet; she split the Smart Board into two and had two students compete to complete a problem. This activity got the students focus and attempt to apply what they were just previously taught. I helped with this activity on the Smart Board while Mrs. Murray prepared for the next subject. I observed Mrs. Murray's fourth grade lesson on basic multiplication tables. Today in class, Mrs. Murray emphasized that they need to attempt to memorize their multiplication facts. Mrs. Murray asked the students to take out their homework from the night before, which was a worksheet. She read over the correct answers by asking different students what they got on their homework. She then proceeded to teach new material. I helped collect the homework and assisted Mrs. Murray is teaching the new material that was based off of basic multiplication skills. I taught students a lesson on how to multiply two digit numbers using the lattice method. During the lesson, I used a YouTube video to demonstrate and explain the procedure. I then did several examples on the board for students. Students then received a handout with several multiplication problems solved using the lattice method. Groups of two to three students then worked together to cooperatively solve several problems on whiteboards. During this time, I worked 1-1 with students who were very confused about the process. After students had a chance to practice several problems, I had

then do problems independently. A quiz was given on the following day to assess their understanding. I taught a lesson on triangles. Students were taught all the triangles (right, obtuse, acute, isosceles, scalene, and equilateral). Students learned how to identify each triangle and how to tell one triangle from another. I used a power point, the smart board, and handouts. Students were also taught key math vocabulary terms such as vertex, vertices, angles, perpendicular, and parallel. During the lesson, students had a chance to draw and identify different triangles. Students had a review practice homework sheet to complete after the lesson to show their understanding of the concepts taught. I taught a lesson on polygons. Students were taught how to recognize a line of symmetry for two-dimensional figures and how to classify two-dimensional figures based on angles, parallel, or perpendicular lines. I used several handouts and a power point during the lesson. The smart board was used, and this allowed for interactive activities to reinforce skills taught. After the lesson, students made a polygon booklet that they completed by writing the definition and making pictures of all polygons. For homework, students took pictures of polygons on their IPads.
