UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

Culture encompasses similarities and differences among people, including their beliefs, knowledge, changes, values, and traditions. Students will explore these elements of society to develop an appreciation and respect for the variety of human cultures.

LESSON OBJECTIVE: 1:Given a map of Saudia Arabia, African and China, TSW will locate and describe human patterns of places and regions of the world with 85% accuracy. 2:Given pictures of customs and animals ,TSW identify people of various ethnic, racial, religious with 85% accuracy. Student Participation The goal of this lesson is for student to demonstrate a clear understanding of different cultures. STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Recognize the contributions of individuals and people of various ethnic, racial, religious, and socioeconomic groups to the development of civilizations. ISTE STANDARES

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE: The key concepts of this lesson is to identify the cultures of Saudi Arabia, China and Africa. In addition, recognize individual differences in language, belief and customs that may be unique to ones culture. This is an introduction to a new chapter. Subsequent lessons include Smartboard, Internet research and diorama project the lesson or technology use will be modified to meet the needs of diverse learners. PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE: Introduction: (15 min) TTW display a world map on the Smartboard. TSW be asked to locate Saudi Arabia,
Africa and China by pointing to them on the map. Students will write words describing each country on the screen. TTW explain that their answers and confirm understanding with thumbs up. Teacher will observe and give students feedback. This activity will be revisited for correctness at the end of the lesson. Procedures (30 minutes) Prior to the Computer: 5 minutes

Students will be placed into cooperative groups of three where each group represents the same country. A table with animals from China, Saudia Arabia and Africa will be assigned where students write meaning of words to emphasize meaning.

At the Computer 20 minutes

Books and pictures will placed around the classroom for students to choose from, computers will set up with research about each country. Students will collaborate and discuss customs, animals, people, and geography. Afterwards, the teacher will diversify groups with students from different countries. Students will share and introduce knowledge about the country that they learned about in the previous group. They will also compare and contrast differences. Students will utilize rubrics to assess classmates knowledge of the country that they will be representing. Teacher observes groups and asks questions to determine student mastery.

5 minutes Students will discuss the similarities and differences on charts. Graphic organizers will be set up by each group and students will determine the similarities of customs, religion, dress, foods and activities. 10 minutes

Closure: TSW discuss and review the culture of various countries and compare and contrast similarities that are seen in their own cities or communities. They will also write exit tickets explaining what was learned or jotting down questions that need clarification. ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: Students are given matching activity sheets for homework. During the closure activity, TTW check for accurate recall by listening to examples from the students about what that they have attained during the group activity. I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
