- Specifying learning objectives: make sure what you want the students to learn matches the strategy - Preparing study guides: student support to help them search for information - Forming student teams: teams should include boys/girls, high/low achievers with/without exceptionalities - Supplementing expert presentations: Students will not be able to teach peers as well as you. You need to be able to fill in any missing pieces.

- Assigning Experts: assign or have students choose component of topic to study in depth - Information gathering: Students find out as much information as they can on their subtopic. - Expert meetings: Experts for each component of the topic meet and decide how to present their findings to class. - Peer instruction: Experts present findings to group mates. - Review & closure: The whole topic is reviewed and summarized. This is where the teacher can fill in any missing pieces.

- Summative: Do students provide the necessary information as dictated by the rubric/study guides used for research? - Formative: Do students work together? Do students make decisions/compromise?

- Students may have a choice in the topic. This gives them a buy-in with the project. - By allowing students to be experts on a subtopic, they are taking responsibility on and feel a sense of pride/ownership in the project.

This model allows for students to work together to teach a topic but still requires independent work from each student as well as interaction with their peers.
