Retrieved from: http://lessons.atozteacherstuff.com/597/the-very-hungry-caterpillar-activities/ o Lesson Background: This is part two of five lessons. The students have already learned the days of the week and have discussed the six different food groups that make up the food plate. During this lesson they will read the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and complete the corresponding activity. The next lesson will have the students learning about rhyming words and proper foods to eat in a day to have a balanced diet.

Learning Objectives o Content: Given the selected vocabulary from the book the students will be able to provide the correct definition for each with 80% accuracy as recorded by the teacher. o Health: When asked to organize students will be able to place the foods in the correct corresponding food category with four out of five correct as charted by the teacher. o Health Standard(s): 7.2.1 Demonstrate healthy practices and behaviors to maintain or improve personal health. Procedure o Introduction: -Ask children what the days of the week are. -Ask students what they think the book will be about. o Steps:

Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to the students, stopping only a couple of times to ask questions or to point out the pictures. Go over the vocabulary selected from the book and help the children define each word. Write the word as well as the definitions on the white board Explain to the children that it is their turn to make a book about what they eat during the week (See attached sample of book)

o Closure:

Stress to children the possibilities of using the days vocabulary words from the book in their own story (Vocabulary sheet attached) Have children use their crayons to draw the pictures of their book to correlate with the sentence that they wrote about each day of the week Gather children together once everyone has completed their books Have children share their books with a partner. Explain to children the game Food Plate Frenzy Discuss the activity and how eating healthy is an important part of growing big and strong

-Have children write/draw in their journals of the activities they have done today. -Ask some students to volunteer to share what they have put into their journals. -Ask students to volunteer and write one of the vocabulary words on the large isle -Explain to students that tomorrow they will be learning about rhyming words and the proper amount of foods that need to be in each section of the food plate in order to eat healthy

o Assessment: When the children are making their personal books assess whether their sentences are properly structured and have content that makes sense. Take note of the students that used the days vocabulary in their books and put it into the childs portfolio.

Interactive Activity/Concept:

Food Plate Frenzy o Resource: Yarkey, Jill. 26 October, 2013.Health Lesson Ideas. PE Central. Retrieved from: http://www.pecentral.org/LessonIdeas/ViewLesson.asp?ID=3703#.Um__uc8o7IU

Concept: This activity relates to the health portion of the lesson plan by having children identify the different foods that belong in each food group. Children will be able to identify the five different parts of the food plate including: fruits, grains, dairy, vegetables and protein. Materials Needed: - Laminated cards with Velcro on the back with different foods that belong in each food group. -One poster for each major food group with felt on the lower half -One cone for each group of students (ex: 15 students would make five groups of three so five cones would be needed)

Procedure:

Spread food cards out in the middle of the floor face down Hang each poster at the opposite end of the classroom from where students will be standing Ask the students to identify the five food groups that make up the food plate: fruits, grains, dairy, vegetables and protein. Split students up into equal groups Place each group behind a cone in a single file line Explain to the students when the cue is given one student from each group (whichever is in the front of the line) will go to the middle of the floor and pick up one food card The child will then decide which food category the picture of food belongs in and hangs it on the poster The student then returns to his/her group and the next person in line goes and repeats the previous steps Have the students complete this cycle until all of the pictures are placed on a poster Discuss with the students if each food was placed correctly and if need be correct the ones that were wrong
