Memorandum Date: March 7, 2014 To: Krista Soria From: Jessica Konstantynowicz Subject: Feasibility Project Proposal Purpose

The purpose of this memo is to request to be allowed to study the feasibility on implementing a safe-driving program for the University of Alaska Anchorage. Summary I propose to research whether it is feasible or not to have a safe-driving program for UAA. There is an interest for this because students who drink need a way home that is not going to put their lives at risk. The resources are readily available as well as a location near Debarr Road and East Northern Light Boulevard. The course of action is beneficial because it could save the lives of our college students who participate in drunk driving. Introduction The first thing affected by any alcoholic beverage is reaction time. It would be beneficial to the publics safety, which should always be our number one priority, to place a safe-driving program at UAA. Over 1,500 students die every year to drunk driving. I myself have lost three friends to drinking while driving. Having to suffer a loss when people you consider family is unbearable. Though the argument that it was

their choice could be argued, as stated before, the first thing affected by consuming an alcoholic beverage is reaction time. This is time that elapses between the stimulus and the response to it. Therefore, the thinking of any one person who has consumed alcohol is not clear and because of that, they seek to perform actions that they cannot handle in that given time. When my three friends were in the car drinking and driving, their reaction time was affected and therefore their actions were affected as well. Proposed Procedures Below is the research I will do and the research I have already completed. Planned Research -Outline and complete a survey for classmates to answer. This will help me determine if my topic is feasible or not. -Request a copy of the survey to place in my final paper to show the information is not falsified in any way -Research the benefits other than fewer deaths to having a safe driving program. Research Completed -Statistics on drunk driving found -Tom Case, Chancellor of UAA background information as he is the person I chose for my Audience Profile -Locations of Bars near UAA campus and UAA housing Criteria

Some basic question I plan to use for Questionnaire. -Is it feasible to provide a safe driving service for the students of UAA? -Will the benefits outweigh the costs? Qualifications I have personal relation to this subject because I have lost friends of my own due to the severity of drinking while driving. I am a student at UAA and I myself have friends who participate in this dangerous activity. If there was an alternative or solution to the problem of drinking and driving, a safe driving program would be it.
