All art is useless

Oscar Wilde wrote this sentence in an introduction to his novel The Picture of Dorian Grey. I believe that this sentence should not be understood literally, but as an ironic way to make a point. The point he was trying to make, in my opinion, is that art, on its own, has no value. Art has value because we give it value because of what it awakes in us. We like looking at art because it reflects something that is in us. Different forms of art arent necessarily good or bad, moral or corrupt. Art is not useful in a way that science or business are, we gain no material benefit from it. But art isnt supposed to be useful that way. I believe that art is useful for individuals and society today, when life is so stressful and hard. Its not limited to any strict and specific form: any music, painting, literature, whatever format you can imagine helps people. Art allows us to express our creative and playful side, its not strict and it has almost no rules. What is art for me might not be for someone else. But thats completely normal. I just feel that any person who is not capable of enjoying any piece of art is to be pitied.
