Article Summary 2 Outline

Name: Kelcey Christensen Presentation Date

Find an article relating to biological anthropology from a scientific peer-reviewed journal and complete the first (Original source) and second (Reflection) parts of the outline. Find a second source related to your first and complete the third part of the outline (Related source). This may be a popular review of the original source. Limited responses will not receive full credit. More detailed instructions and links to resources are posted in Canvas. This outline should be completed and turned in on the day you present to the class and it will be used for grading the assignment. Additionally, submit the summary portions only in Canvas. No late work will be accepted.

Pts. 1. Original source: .5 ____ a. Title: Ancient DNA from European Early Neolithic Farmers Reveals Their Near Eastern Affinities .5 ____ Author(s): Wolfgang Haak mail, Oleg Balanovsky, Juan J. Sanchez, Sergey Koshel, Valery Zaporozhchenko, Clio S. I. Der Sarkissian, Guido Brandt, Carolin Schwarz, Nicole Nicklisch, Veit Dresely, Barbara Fritsch, Elena Balanovska Richard Villems, Harald Meller, and Allan Cooper. .5 ____ b. Authors credentials: All of them have high degrees and work for places like the department of anthropology. .5 ____ c. Source (complete reference) I found this article on PLOS in the biology section 5 ____ d. Summary (note that the summary length should be commensurate with the article length and should be in narrative (paragraph) format and that an in-text citation is required). This summary should identify the research topic, hypothesis, methods, results, and conclusion: They tested (including cloning DNA) ancient DNA from farmers and they found out that they traveled into central Europe. They also found DNA in modern humans. They said that these early humans started from a small group containing at most 5,000 females. When they genitally mapped their results they found these people were very similar to modern-day people in Turkey, Armenia, Iraq, and Iran. Stating they had a clear genetic similarity. 1 ____ e. Critical evaluation (what makes this source credible? Why should this information be believed?): I think that this should be believed, because they have all the evidence laid out in front of you. They use graphs, tables, and formulas to represent and prove their data. All of the people who contributed all have high education and work in a field that directly deals with this type of stuff. 1 ____ f. Relevance to biological anthropology: This is relevant to biological anthropology, because they are studding DNA to genetically connect it modern humans. They look at DNA code as well as mutations and gene flow. 1 ____ g. Other disciplines touched upon: They talked about h. Synthesis 1 ____ i. In one sentence, summarize the main point of the article: the take-away message. Ancient farmers are genetically connected to modern-day humans all over Europe, suggesting expansion. 2 ____ 2. Reflection a. Which part of this assignment was most difficult and why? It was kind of a hard article to read, because it has all the formulas in the middle of the text. They

were a little hard to understand. Also it was written for people who are ahead of my education when it comes to this subject; some things when over my head. b. Identify at least one question you have after reading the original article and explain how you could go about finding an answer. Is this something that they do to DNA often? I guess I could google it or something, look for other instances where it has happened. Or I could look up the process of this testing and from the results I can see how much information there is on this topic. c. Reflect on how the critical evaluation process impacted your opinion on the article. I felt like I could believe this article, because it was just so factual with all the evidence right there with it. d. How might the information in the article be useful in the future? This might be answered very broadly such as how an understanding of larger biological principles might be useful. Knowing where modern-day humans come from is very useful. Its the same reason that we look at all the pre-humans. We can go on to answer more questions about where humans came from. We can continue figuring out evolution altogether. 3. Related source .5 ____ a. Title: Ancient DNA from an Early Neolithic Iberian population supports a pioneer colonization by rst farmers .5 ____ b. Author(s): Manuel Edo Benaiges .5 ____ c. Authors credentials: He was published by Academia.edu d. Complete reference I found this article on academia.edu Molecular 2011 3 ____ e. Summary (note that the summary length should be commensurate with the article length and should be in narrative (paragraph) format and that an in-text citation is required): He did research and tests to see the relativness from ancient DNA to modern-day humans. He found that haplogroup X is rare in modern humans, it is only about 2-3% 1 ____ f. Critical evaluation (what makes this source credible? Why should this information be believed?): There are some graphs and tables in the article. He does present formulas and all the date he found that supports his idea. 1 ____ g. Relevance to chosen article: Both article show the research and information to connect ancient DNA to modern humans. Doing this, they can see the how the ancient humans moved about and dispersed
