Grade: 5 th Grade Standard: By the end of the lesson students will have reviewed the types of energy and demonstrated their knowledge of energy through a quiz game.
TEKS for Technology Application: 2 (C) collaborate effectively through personal learning communities and social environments; 6 (A) demonstrate an understanding of technology concepts, including terminology for the use of operating systems, network system, virtual systems, and learning systems appropriate for grades 3-5 learning Objective (Explicit): Students will demonstrate their knowledge of thermal, mechanical, light, sound, and electrical energy through their answer sheets after the review quiz is complete. Evidence of Mastery (Measurable): Include a copy of the lesson assessment. Provide exemplar student responses with the level of detail you expect to see. Assign value to each portion of the response Sub-objectives: This review quiz will serve to trigger the students memory on past lessons on types of energy from the beginning of the year. This is important to the students because their science STAAR test is coming up in two weeks. We will review what energy is and the different types then students will be able to demonstrate what they have learned through the energy quiz. The team answer sheets will show me how many students grasp that particular question and how many still need help.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex): How will you review past learning and make connections to previous lessons? What skills and content are needed to ultimately master this lesson objective? How is this objective relevant to students, their lives, and/or the real world? Materials (Including Technology Tools): Prezi 5 th Grade Science STAAR Review Paper/Pencils for each group Scoreboard/ Candy for class The Technology Tools Should Have: Visuals that establish the purpose of the lesson, preview the organization of the lesson, and include internal summaries of the lesson. Examples, illustrations, analogies, and labels for new concepts and ideas. Logical sequencing and segmenting. All essential information and no irrelevant, confusing, or nonessential information. Incorporate multimedia and technology.
Activity: Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life) How will you activate student interest? How will you connect to past learning? How will you present the objective in an engaging and student-friendly way? How will you communicate its importance and make the content relevant to your students? Today we are going to have a review on the different types of energy. Hopefully this will calm your test nerves and help you remember past lessons. You have learned about mechanical, light, sound, thermal and electrical energy and it is important to pay attention to this review because the material we are covering will most likely appear on the science STARR next week. I will present this review in a student-friendly way by making the quiz into a competition. The 5 th graders love to compete against one another and I will encourage this by giving out candy to the winners of the competition and to those who answer specific questions (echolocation and thermometer).

Teacher Will: How will you model/explain/demonstrate all knowledge/skills required of the objective? How will you address misunderstandings or common student errors? How will you check for understanding? How will you explain and model behavioral expectations?
Student Will: What will students be doing to actively capture and process the new material? How will students be engaged?
I will first review what energy is and the five different types to refresh the students memories. I will show them the 3-minute video on energy before they will begin a review quiz. I will explain instructions of the review game to the students at the very beginning of the lesson so that there is no confusion. and will check for understanding using the answer sheets each team will turn in. I will discuss why each answer is correct after we have revealed the correct answer.
Students will be collaborating within their groups to come up with an answer for each question. Students will then write their answers on their answer sheet. After all material has been reviewed and all questions have been written down I will go through each question and discuss the correct answer. This would be a time for students to ask questions if they are confused. The Technology Tools should: Support the lesson objectives. Sustain students attention. Provide time for reflection. Are relevant to students lives. Induce student curiosity and suspense. Incorporate multimedia and technology. Incorporate resources beyond the school curriculum texts.
Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections: How will students summarize and state the significance of what they learned? Why will students be engaged?
The team that has the most correct answers will get candy for lunchtime. This will keep the students competing and engaged throughout the review. Before the students can leave for lunch they will write at least one thing they learned (or remembered after review) in an index card. These cards will act as exit tickets as the students line up for lunch.
