ART 1010:

EXPLORING ART

EVON HANSON

Evon Hanson ~ Artist Statement

I have always wanted to be an artist but I think I need an Art degree to be
able to call myself an artist. I am drawn to beautiful art and I have a strong
desire to create it. I have so many ideas and things that I want to do. I love
creating something from nothing! I always have to be making something,
whenever I see something I think Cool! I could make.
I wish I could just enjoy creating art instead of feeling stressed, trying to
be perfect. Trying to be an artist and a perfectionist is very frustrating!
Ever since I was little I have wanted to take art lessons to learn how to
draw and paint. I dont remember very much of what I learned in school but I
still remember almost all of the art projects.
Pencil has been my preferred media ever since my high school art teacher
entered my pencil drawing of a paper sack into the Springville Art Museum
and the Utah High School Art Shows. I won purple ribbons in both shows.
I also prefer pencil because pencils have erasers so I can fix my mistakes.
I am very detail oriented so my preferred art styles
are Realism, Idealism, and Fantasy.
My favorite art looks like a tropical paradise with palm trees
on the beach, the ocean, the sun and the sand. I like dolphins,
seagulls, boats, sunsets, starry skies, clouds and rainbows.
My five favorites art pieces or projects I chose not because
they were the best but because there was no right or wrong. I
could do whatever I wanted and that took some of the pressure off
of me. I could let myself go or Let it go and relax a little bit and
almost enjoy my art.
My five favorite pieces are:
#1. Illuminated Manuscript Page
#2. Alternative Media ~ Sculpey Sculptures
#3. Perspective Drawing
#4. Referenced Artist
#5. Art Therapy Process
For my observation and reflection I chose
my Illuminated Manuscript Page and my Perspective Drawing.
They were both challenging in different ways. The Illuminated
Manuscript Page was challenging because I used so many
different mediums. I began with pencil for the illustrations and
the lines to layout the manuscript. Then I used Pen and Ink for
the calligraphy. Followed by watercolor for the sand, water, sun
and sky. Then back to pencil for the footprints in the sand and
black ink for the seagulls in the sky. For my Perspective Drawing
I only used pencil, there was no color, only the different shades
of gray and the white of the paper.
A few of the elements of art I used in my Illuminated Manuscript Page
were color, motion, light, line, texture and value.
The value of a color is its lightness or darkness. The water shows
the different values of blue while the white waves seem to create motion.
The amount of light reflected by the surface creates the value. The more
light reflected, the lighter the surface. I chose to leave the sun white in
my painting because the most light is reflected by a white surface and I
wanted the sun to really glow. The water is painted with blues and
greens and because they are cool colors the temperature of the water
seems cooler and in contrast I used warm colors near the sun. The
yellow, orange and red seem to heat up the sun and the variations of
browns and tans create warmth and texture in the sand. The picture is
divided using lines showing distance and separating the colors of the
rainbow.
My 2-point perspective drawing was challenging and fun at the
same time. Connecting lines to 2-points was confusing at first then
as it started to make sense to me it was like I was designing a
dream home. The gray pencil lines on white paper created dark
against light and the differences in value could be seen while other
elements of art appeared. Light made it possible to see the lines,
points, texture, and shapes. The lines in the wood created texture.
They are the only lines in the drawing that are not straight or drawn
with a ruler. The repetitive shapes of the stairs and the bricks
showed texture and shadows. Before I drew the bricks, the house
looked like a modern stucco house. After I drew the bricks and the
shadows the house seemed to turn into a cottage so I drew a
HOME wooden plaque above the sliding glass doors.
