WV CSOs

experience by identifying and using grade appropriate essential reading components (phonemic awareness,
phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, written application)

syllabication
diphthongs
digraphs
variant vowel sounds such as r-controlled

RLA.O.2.1.11 Search use literary and informational texts to summarize, determine story elements, determine

STRATEGIES
Reading of Green Wilma Lost in Space/ Venn diagram activity/ Introduction of syllables/ syllable
worksheet/teacher explanation/ Green Wilma is Missing activity/ student discussion/ closure

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION/ ADAPTATIONS/ INTERVENTIONS
Students with visual problems will sit closer to the front of the room in order to see.
Students with hearing problems will sit closer to the front of the classroom in order to hear.
PROCEDURES
Introduction/ Lesson Set
-First, I will read the story Green Wilma Lost in Space by Tedd Arnold to the class.
-I will then ask students if they know what a Venn diagram is and let them explain if they do.
-I will then explain to them if they dont know.
-I will then explain that we will be making one as a class comparing and contrasting Green Wilma and Blooger

Body & Transitions
-I will begin by drawing a Venn diagram on the white board and explaining to students that one side is for Green
Wilma and one side is for Blooger. Where they dont touch is where you put how theyre different and where they
meet in the middle is where you put their similarities.
-We will then fill the rest of it out as a class.
-I will then introduced syllables to the class and ask if anybody knows what they are and if they do then they can
explain it.
-I will then give them my explanation of syllables and how to syllabicate words.
-We will try a few together as a class.
-They will then be given a worksheet with words from Green Wilma and asked to syllabicate them themselves.
-We will then go over them.
- I will then explain our next activity which is to make missing posters for Green Wilma.
-I will show the students an example of a missing pet poster and then tell them that is what they will be doing and
that they will be asked to write a description of Wilma. I will urge them to think back to our science lesson and
remember the characteristics of an amphibian and use some of those in their poster.
-I will pass out paper, markers, crayons, etc. to the students and have them begin their poster.
- After, students will be able to show their posters and explain them to me.

Closure
-For closure, I will call on students to share with the class what they have learned with this lesson and answer any
questions they may have.

ASSESSMENT

Diagnostic:
The Venn diagram we use to compare and contrast Green Wilma and Blooger will serve as the diagnostic testing.
Formative:
I will observe students by walking around the classroom when they are completing both their syllabus worksheet
and their Green Wilma is Missing! Activity.
Summative:
The syllables worksheet the students are required to complete will serve as the summative assessment for this
lesson.
