Problem scenario: You are asked to design a 30-minute, engaging instructional activity for a PreK-20 of your choice, for a subject of your choice.
3 I am reading a chapter book to a second grade class. My goal is to popcorn read with the students and have them finish one chapter and write a short paragraph on their understanding of the chapter, all in 30 minutes.
Materials needed:
We will need a chapter book, a classroom, a piece of paper, a pencil, and your brain.
Classroom Required:
We will need just our normal set classroom. 4
Engaging activities:
Class reads aloud and then we individually write a paragraph about our comprehension of that chapter in the book, and then we talk about what we individually wrote together as a class.
Instructional strategy:
I will have the class pick a chapter book from or book selection in the classroom, then we will read the first chapter of that book, I will take volunteers first, then call on random students to read a page. Students may take notes on important things while we read on the handout I give them. Once we are done reading this chapter, I will have the students write a short paragraph on what they thought of the chapter and what it talked about, was there a moral? What was the underlying message? Once they are done writing this, we will quickly talk about what the students said in their short paragraphs.
Assessment:
5 I would then collect this assignment and grade it by check, plus or minus. Check being they had the moral of the chapter down and knew exactly what it was saying, the plus would be that the student had the right idea and then the minus would be that they were completely off and it seemed like they didnt even listen to the story.
