Unit Title: Bivariate Relationships Name: Rodney Perez
Content Area: Algebra 1 Grade Level: 7-8th CA Content Standards/Common Core State Standards 8.EE.5 Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations. 8.EE.8.C Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations. 8.F.3-5 Use functions to model relationships between quantities. 8.SP.1-2 Investigate patterns of association in bivariate data. A1.F.IF.1-2 Understand the concept of a function and use function notation. [Learn as general principle; focus on linear and exponential and on arithmetic and geometric sequences.] Big Ideas: Below are the list of key terms and ideas discussed in this unit: Plotting Ordered pair Coordinate plane Slope Slope Intercept Form Functions (1 to 1) Correlations
Line of Best Fit Domain/Range Mid-point Distance Clustering Outliers Positive/negative association Linear/non-linear association Unit Goals and Objectives: Students will be able to represent relations as sets of ordered pairs, tables, mappings, and graphs. Students will be able to determine whether a relation is a function. Students will be able to find function values. Students will be able to solve linear equations with two variables in respect to one variable. Students will be able to construct a graph that represents linear equations/inequalities. Students will be able to identify functions by using the vertical line test and the definition of a function. Students will be able to construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Students will be able to solve linear equations with more than two variables in respect to one variable. Students will be able to support their rationale by using at least two vocabularies in their written assessment. Students will be able to construct scatter plots for bivariate measurements and explain their investigations of patterns of association between two quantities. Unit Summary: The goal of this unit is to implement real world mathematical problems related to solving linear equations with two or more variables. There is a two day lesson that involves students coming up with their own real world mathematical problem that relates to solving linear equations with two variables. Ultimately, the unit introduces the concept of correlation and the line of best fit by a bungee Barbie activity at the end. This will allow students to dig into the mathematics by providing a hands-on activity for them. Students will be able to determine whether a relation is a function. Students will be able to find function values. Students will be able to identify functions by using the vertical line test and the definition of a function.
Acceptable Evidence: Determine if a relationship is a function Solve for range given domain Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction Lesson Activities: Students will use a digital lecture and follow along with guided notes. The lesson has students think about what a function entails and demonstrate different representations of a function. Lesson 2 (Webercise) Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to find function values. Students will be able to Acceptable Evidence: Students will be able to explain their thoughts and determine an algebraic representation of a Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Lesson Activities: Students will do a webercise to explore the basics of Linear Functions. They will use construct a graph that represents linear equations/inequalities. Students will be able to solve linear equations with more than two variables in respect to one variable. Students will be able to support their rationale by using at least two vocabularies in their written assessment. Students will be able to construct scatter plots for bivariate measurements and explain their investigations of patterns of association between two quantities.
function from information given. Presentation Organization Interaction graphing apps to discover how changing each term affects the shape of the graph. They will compile their discoveries onto a worksheet. Lesson 3 (Graphic Organizer) Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to represent relations as sets of ordered pairs, tables, mappings, and graphs.
Acceptable Evidence: Organize content of the unit Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction Lesson Activities: Students will research and organize all that theyve learned thus far from the unit and linear functions. They will collaborate to make a graphic organizer.
