EFFECTIVE TEACHING MODEL: REVISED STANDARD BASED LESSON

PLAN
I. Standard:
a. N.MR.05.07 Find the prime factorization of numbers from 2 through 50,
express in exponential notation, and understand that every whole number
greater than 1 is either prime or can be expressed as a product of primes.
II. Objective
a. I can find the prime factorization of a number using factor trees
b. I can write the factorization in a number sentence using exponents
III. Anticipatory Set:
a. I will remind students of how weve been practicing prime factorization
b. I will do some pre-assessment by asking them whether they think it is hard or
easy
IV. Input:
a. Task Analysis
i. I will show students step-by-step how to do a factor tree
ii. I will have the students guide me through a problem on the board
together
iii. I will then give each student a whiteboard and a marker
iv. I will give each student a different number to write on the top center of
their board
v. I will instruct students to draw the first tree branches
vi. I will then tell students that we are going to pass the boards around
and each person is going to complete the next step.
vii. Once they have finished the next step, they will pass the board to the
next person in the circle.
viii. If they believe they have done the last step, they will push their chair
away from the table and wait for the others to be done
ix. Once everyone is done, we will check each students work. If the
boards need to be passed again at that time, we will continue
x. We will redo this activity a few times, as time allows
xi. After, I will give each student a different number to solve for
xii. Once they have solved, I will check their work and if they have
everything correct, they can return to whole group instruction
b. Thinking Levels: Blooms Taxonomy
i. Understanding Students will review how to do factor trees
ii. Application Students will apply their previous knowledge of factor
trees to this collaborative activity
c. Accommodations
i. Remediation
1. Students who are having trouble may need more individual
assistance
ii. Extension
1. If students understand how to do the factor trees they may
return to class as this is a review activity only
iii. Learning styles
1. Visual seeing the example
2. Interpersonal working with each other to solve the problem
3. Kinesthetic using whiteboards
4. Verbal presenting their problem
5. Logical/Mathematical problem solving
d. Managing the lesson
i. Instructional methods:
1. Demonstration
2. Group work
3. Individual practice
ii. Engagement strategies
1. Students will be engaged by passing the boards around and
collaborating on a problem
iii. Materials needed and prepared
1. White board
2. Dry erase markers
3. Mini white board for each student
V. Modeling:
a. I will model a factor tree by showing one in the beginning
b. I will model how to do the activity with a practice round
VI. Checking for Understanding:
a. How do you know youre at the end?
b. What is a way to double check your work?
VII. Guided Practice
a. Students will pass the boards and I will answer questions when necessary
VIII. Closure
a. What are some things to remember when you are trying to find the prime
factorization?
IX. Assessment
a. I will assess students based on their final individual factor tree
