EDUC 640 Technology in the Classroom

Signature Assignment
Roland Pendleton

Introduction:
What is your institutions purpose or mission statement?
Kailua High Schools mission is to develop young men and women into competent well
rounded individuals. Students with open minds and eager hearts will achieve an understanding of
technology and gain experience for the future. We encourage each student to push themselves
and expand their knowledge in the use of technology. Their technical knowledge will spark their
passion for learning and assist them throughout their quest for excellence.
What are your needs and what is the expected impact of the technology on learning?
Kailua High School is a 9-12 school serving a population of around 850 students. The
ethnic distribution of students is 82% Asian, 12% White, and 6% Other (Kailua High, 2013).
Studies have shown that Kailua High has not done well on standardized test. Many of its students
come from low income families. Many of these families are too poor to afford computers. Our
school needs money to invest in computers. The few computers that the school has are out of
date. In order to properly teach our students, an additional 40 new computers will be needed.
Goals and Objectives:
What are the student learning goals in regard to implementing the technology?
Kailua High Schools first goal is to use the technology to help teachers better teach their
students. The school hopes that the computers would allow both teachers and students access to
various online education tools. From these tools, it is the schools goal to broaden their students
knowledge and educate them to become self-directed learners.
The second goal is to increase the computer literacy rates in young students. There are
many children whose parents cannot afford to buy computers. There are other students who own
computers but do not know how to use them. In a computer driven society, computer literacy is
essential (Computer Literacy, 2013).
How would it be integrated into the curriculum?
The availability of these computers would help both students and teachers. Through
education tools, students would be able to find educational youtube videos, search for historical
and scientific journals, and maintain access to thousands of other educational websites. There are
many ways in which computers can be useful. Computers would allow students to complete
research for projects. Teachers would be able to find educational songs, video clips, and teaching
tools online.
Resources needed:
What technological tools would be needed to carry out the vision, goals, and
objectives of your institution?
The technological tools that would be needed are computers and high speed wireless
internet access.
How would they support the student learning goals?
The computers would support the student learning goals by providing students with a
limitless amount of information. With a simple click of the mouse, students can access thousands
of documents. These documents contain information that can help students learn english, social
studies, math, and science. An example can be found at teenbiz.com. From this site, students
expand their English skills by reading articles and answering the questions. Teeenbiz grades the
answers and gives an idea of the students reading comprehension level.
Where would they be located?
The computers would be located in the classrooms and in the computer labs.
In general what type of budget would be needed for purchasing these resources?
Kailua High School will need approximately 40 additional computers. A budget of
$20,000 would be appropriate.
How will the effectiveness of these resources be measured?
The effectiveness of these resources would be measured through grades,
teacher/parent/student evaluations, and standardized test scores. The effectiveness will be
measured by looking at the results of both before and after the incorporation of technology.
Training
What type of training would be involved with integrating the technology?
The school plan is for all classroom teachers to be trained in teaching basic computer
skills. The plan includes coaching, technology workshops, and web based training. A week long
workshop would occur before the beginning of the school year. A weekly meeting will be held
every Wednesday in which teachers would have time to collaborate and talk about the
technology.
What will be required in terms of staff development to support the goals for future
student learning?
Kailua high school will conduct a week long workshop before the beginning of the school
year. The workshop will educate teachers on how to use the computers and how teachers can
help students with the computers. There are many teachers who know how to use computers but
do not realize the potential of the computers. The workshop would also reveal the many
possibilities that the computers have to offer. Weekly meetings will be held which will allow
teachers to discuss problems and share ideas.
Maintenance:
What is the plan for maintaining these resources?
To maintain these resources, educators will be instructed to keep the computers away
from wet and damp areas. Teachers would be strongly advised to keep computers away from the
windows to avoid rain. To avoid accidents, students would not be allowed to eat or drink near the
computers.
Who will be responsible for maintenance?
Every educator will be responsible for every computer that they have in their rooms. For
example, the librarian would be responsible for all 20 computers in her room, and a teacher
would be responsible for all 3 computers in her room. There will also be Tech experts who
would be available to assist with any computer problems.

Future Goals:
What are the short term goals for integrating the technology into the curriculum?
The short term goal for integrating technology into the classroom is for students to
acquire the basic skills of computer management. The ability to use a computer is a necessary
skill to have in order to succeed in a technology driven world.
What are the long term goals for integrating the technology into the curriculum?
The long term goal for integrating technology into the classroom is for students to use
computers to gain a proficiency in english, science, math, and social studies. The school would
like students to increase their knowledge through computers. Educators realize that computers
give students the opportunity to learn how to keep themselves motivated and learn on their own.
Computers would not only provide knowledge, but would also train students to be independent
self-educated learners.
Student Assessment:
How will the institution current technology assist with student assessment?
The institution of current technology would assist in raising student assessment scores by
helping students become self-directed learners. Technology gives the students the ability to
immense research in a short amount of time. The information provided through technology
allows students to learn more without leaving the classroom. From this ability, assessment scores
would increase.
How will the technology-based assessments be incorporated in the future?
Technology based assessments will be incorporated in the future though computers.
Though computers, students can access many different online sites that can assess their
knowledge. A website such as teenbiz will be able to grade the students answers and show how
the students progressed over time.
Concluding Remarks:
How will this plan fulfill meeting the ISTEs NETS for teachers?
The NETS for teachers include: professional growth, student learning, digital age
learning, and digital age growth (ISTE, 2013). This plan fulfills meeting the NETS for teachers
in many different ways. Professional growth is gained through the practice of learning and
teaching about proper computer use. Student learning is gained through the reading of the many
articles that the internet offers. Digital age learning and digital age growth is gained from the
repetitive practice of constant use of computers.
