LESSON PLAN-Algebra

Topic, class, and level

Operations of polynomials: review session (adding, subtracting, and multiplication), Grade 9

Objectives. (What are you trying to do in this lesson?)

1. Students will practice operations of polynomials (adding, subtracting, multiplying) by
playing Robert Reporting activity
Understandings. (What do you want students to know and be able to do at the end of this
lesson?)

1. Students will be able to gain a deeper understanding on how to operate polynomials,
including adding, subtracting, multiplying polynomials.

Knowledge Outcomes. (What content knowledge do you want your students to gain as a result
of this lesson? Please refer to the MA Curriculum Frameworks.)

A-APR.1. Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely,
they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add,
subtract, and multiply polynomials.
Assessment. (How will you check for student achievement and understanding?)
Homework, Robert Reporting activity
Instructional Approach. (Describe activities, allotted time, and closure)

1. (5 10 min.) Do-now problem (see the worksheet) and homework check.
2. (40 min.) Robert Reporting Activity (see the worksheet)
Rules: Students will be divided into six groups with four students in each group. Every
group is going to solve 12 questions. These 12 questions have been printed on ticket
individually (see attachment). Every student will get a worksheet to write down the
solving process for each question. Each group has to work on the same question together.
Your group cannot work on the next problem until all group members finish that
problem. One of the group members will represent his/her group to report the answer. If
the answer is right, his/her group can exchange the 1
st
ticket for another ticket to work on
the next problem. Also, the reporting student will get the teachers initials, and the
reporting student will be able to give his/her group members his/her initial on the
worksheet. Otherwise, they get the report back and continue to work on the current
problem. Each student has to be the reporter once before any students can be the reporter
second time.
3. Assign homework due next time.

Skills to be emphasized.

1. Solve the problems involving operation (adding, subtracting, multiplying) of
polynomials.

Materials needed.

24 Robert Reporting worksheets
15 tickets of polynomial operating problems (6 copies)

Sponge activity (to soak up extra time).
