You will observe for at least five hours. During this time, you are expected to reflect on your experiences. Think about the literacy used within the class, strategies used, and any Aha moments worth keeping. Log the experience on the Observation Log. You will write the clinical date, time, subject, and then a quick synthesis about your experiences. Questions to consider: What was the class doing? What diversity did you see among the learners? What was the teacher doing? How did he or she deliver the instruction? What forms of literacy did you see? What texts were used during instruction? If you taught the lesson, what would you do the same? Differently? Clinical Observation Log Date, Time, Subject Experience/Aha Moments 3/20/14

6 th Grade Social Studies -Every student had a laptop. They did their study guides on them and looked up answers while the teacher was asking questions. -The teacher was walking around the classroom the entire time monitoring the students. -There were text books on everyones desks but only a couple of the students used them to look up answers. -The teacher was also using the Smart Board to show maps of the countries the class was talking about. -There was several history books displayed around the room as well as a couple of bulletin boards with students artwork of a historical events on the board. -I think in my classroom I would use the Smart Board for the students to use during presentations or classroom discussions. ah ha Moments: -I really thought it was interesting how the teacher used the smart board with the students. He played a review game with them and the students were very into it and paying attention. -Every single student was not playing around on their computer during class time. I thought that was very interesting because there were about twenty students in the classroom and everyone was paying attention. -The classroom was very simple, allowed students to get work done. -Teacher had a tough love attitude. Maybe thats why students were well behaved throughout the class.

6 th grade Science -The class had the choice to watch a movie clip on Mythology or to work on their project in class. -There was one deaf student. There was a sign language person in front of the class. -The teacher watched the video with the students and made comments about it. -The students used their laptops and classroom resource books to research their project. -The classroom was filled with fun peace signs and quotes. -If I taught the class, I would try to fill the room with less distracting items. It was my first time in the room but I spent a good amount of time looking around at all the different decorations that were around the room. This could be very distracting for new students or students with dyslexia. ah ha Moment: -The teacher gave the students choices on what to do for the class period. Personally, it would be hard for me to not have everything planned, so giving the students choices would be difficult. All the students had a class discussion and decided reasonably what they wanted to do. It was very organized and allowed the students to feel in control. -The

6 th grade Band -The class didnt make that much noise when they walked in the classroom.
-There was one classroom board with rules and events on it. -The teacher was very serious about the work but had fun with the students. -There were several different diverse students in the class. -The only text books used in the classroom was the music books. -If I taught the class, I would use better classroom management. Several of the students were talking loudly while the teacher was talking to other students and that allowed for a lot of distraction.
ah ha moments: As a former band student, I thought that the students were extremely well behaved for the most part. The teacher had to stop a couple of times to interrupt the class but not as much as I remember growing up. I also wonder what the band teacher does when a deaf or blind student is in band.

5 th & 6 th grade Language Arts
-There was one blind student in the class. The teacher provided the student with a braille form of the book he was assigned to read. -Students had a choice to read their assigned text or to finish a paper they were doing. -At the beginning of class, the teacher told the students about a stabbing that occurred in a different state. The students asked questions about it and the teacher reassured them that they were safe at Metcalf. -The teacher was very honest with the students and allowed them to ask whatever questions they wanted. -If I taught the class, I would try to do the same as this teacher did with handling horrible current events. The teacher allowed the class to have a safe space and talk about the topic without judgment. ah ha moment: Something I will always remember from that class is how the teacher talked to the students about the stabbing. I thought that it was extremely professional and well handled. As a teacher, I dont know how comfortable I would feel talking to students about that because I wouldnt want to scare them or give them the wrong impression. The way she handled it allowed the students to feel like adults and safe to talk to her about their feelings. Also, the room was very simple and down to the point. It allowed students not to spend a lot of time looking around. -The room was cluttered with things. Allowed the students to spend way to much time looking around at the room instead of the teacher or paying attention. I thought the room looked really nice but was super overdone and not science related.

7 th Grade Humanities -There were several tables around the room. There were about 3 students to a table. -Every student had their own computer. -The teacher gave the students a choice between doing their homework or finishing a paper. -The students talked with their tables while working. There was a relaxed atmosphere while everyone was doing their work. -The teacher was very friendly. While the students did their work, the teacher would walk about and ask them questions regarding what they were working on. -If I taught this class, I would keep the table set up. I thought that the groups of different tables was nice for the students so that they could have people to work with as well as talk to.
ah ha moments: -Teacher giving students choices, allowed the students to feel in charge. -Teacher had good walking around time. Allowed the students to ask questions and get one on one help. -Class had a lot of work time, allowed for students to have a quiet time to work on their projects. I thought this was a well-organized time.
