Dear 5
th
Grade Families,
It is now time to start our exciting animal reports! Your child will choose an animal of
his/her choice to research. The students will have ample opportunities to research his/her
animal in class. The students will be handwriting the reports in school during science class,
guided by a specific outline. The students may research at home and bring material to class,
but composing the report must be completed in class, unless instructed otherwise. We will be
working step by step, using the correct writing process, and making sure the content is used
correctly. The written report will be due on Wednesday, April 30
th
.
The students will also be responsible for creating a poster to represent their animal.
The poster must include: pictures/drawing of the animal; five facts about the animal; the name
of the animal; and the students name. The students may choose any five interesting facts
about their animal from their report to share on their poster. The posters are due on Tuesday,
May 6
th
.
When the reports and posters are finished, the students will share their report with the
class, during an oral presentation. The students will be given a note card in which they will
write a fact from EACH section of the animal report outline to use for their presentation. They
will also display their poster for the class to observe. The students will be graded on eye
contact with the audience, enthusiasm, and tone of voice. The students will present their
report/poster with the class on May 7
th
and May 8
th
.
Attached is a copy of the outline, and scoring rubrics for you to review. If you have any
questions or concerns, feel free to contact us at school. Thank you for your cooperation and
support. It is always appreciated!
Best Regards,
The 5
