Grade Spanish 1
Date Lesson: Time
F: March 21 Intro to Google Voice 55 min
Previous
Yesterday the students took their Unit 4 test; therefore, today we are staring a new unit an
introducing the themes and routines.
Goal(s)
The goal for todays lesson is that the students leave class with both an understanding of the routines
for the next unit as well as having practiced and be able to use Google Voice to complete assignments.
Objectives
1. Students will understand classroom routines and expectations for Unit 5.
2. Students will learn and carry out the steps necessary in order to leave a message via Google
Voice.
3. Students will use Google Voice to leave their first messages towards improvement in
communication and pronunciation of the Spanish language.
Standards
Michigan World Language Standards:
1.3) Communication (Presentational): Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an
audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
5.1) Communities (Use of Language): Students use the language both within and beyond the school
setting.

ISTE National Educational Technology Standards:
This lesson was planned to help the students work towards the following (highlighted in yellow)
components of the stated ISTE standards:
1) Creativity & Innovation: Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and
develop innovative products and processes using technology.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes: The students will use
their existing knowledge of Spanish in order to produce a recorded message of themselves
answering questions to a given prompt. Although the questions and vocabulary are familiar to
the students, the process of using technology to produce this recording is new. Some students
dont volunteer as much in Spanish class so I thought using Google Voice might give them a
way to do this, without being put on the spot in class. In this way, the students are developing
innovative products by sharing their voice through the recording.
b. Create original works as a mean of personal or group expression: The students will create
original works in this lesson through being able to express their ideas in the recording. Each
students will be tailored to who they are, where they are from, what they like. In this way the
creation is original and individual to each student.
c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues
d. Identify trends and forecast possibilities
5) Digital Citizenship: Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to

technology and practice legal and ethical behavior.
a. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology: The
responsibility component to this lesson is a huge part to the Google Voice assignment. Since
the students will be using technology and they will eventually be using it independently
outside of school, it is important that they understand the responsibilities and boundaries
around this particular technological component. For example, the students need to be
responsible in their use of this number (not using for silly phone calls pranks, etc.). The
students will also be responsible for the safe and legal practice of using their phones in class.
Although phones are not allowed in the classroom at my placement, if teachers are
incorporating them in the lesson, they can give the students permission to use them. It will be
important to review with the students when the appropriate time to have out their phone will
be throughout the lesson as well as being responsible with how they are using their phones in
class (only for the assignment and nothing else).
b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and
productivity: The students will use their technology for learning purposes in a way that helps
them to understand the positive role that phones/technology can have on their mastery of
communicating in Spanish. In my placement, where phones are not usually permitted in class
I am looking forward to talking about the students personal technology in a positive light in a
way that is geared toward learning and education.
c. Demonstrates personal responsibility for lifelong learning
d. Exhibit leadership for digital citizenship
6) Technology Operations and Concepts: Students demonstrate a sound understanding of
technology concepts, systems, and operations.
a. Understand and use technology systems: Throughout this lesson, the students have to learn
about how Google Voice will work. One important understanding that the students will need
to have is that their message will go into a file within a program where I will be able to listen
to it. Since I dont plan on recording all their numbers and I will have no other way to know
who they are, they must share their name at the beginning. It will also help to show them
where their message goes to help them understand they arent calling my personal phone, but
rather a number specifically being used for this class.
b. Select and use applications effectively and productively
c. Troubleshoot systems and applications: Throughout the lesson it will be necessary that the
students learn how to troubleshoot with Google Voice. Although I have tested the number
with friends prior to this lesson being enacted, technology can always have its glitches. With
this being said, it is important that I explain to students how Google Voice works, what to do
if they encounter any problems, and discuss alternatives if they were to encounter such a
problem.
d. Transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies.
Agenda (on board)
Today we will learn the themes and routines for our new unit.
** If you have a phone at school, please bring it to class today.

Schedule of week
Do Now (Para hacer) to be done when the song ends and I finish the homework check/passing
back assignments. A review of what the students are working on and a way for me to informally
assess the students understanding of class concepts. Students turn in the weeks Do Nows every
Friday.
10 (20) Explanation of Google Voice
These prompts will be given every Tuesday after weve learned the new material for the week and
be due by Thursday night
Be sure to be clear
If you dont have access to a phone you can do activity with me during advisory, before/after
school, during lunch, before/after class
Go through the instruction worksheet and rubric. Remind students to write out response to
prompt first and practice with a partner.
(25) (45) Student Work Time
Remind students that they have 25 minutes so they need to use their time efficiently.
If they have any questions, please ask!
Tell them I will remind them when there are about 10 and 5 minutes left as well as playing music
to send the message to regroup!
(15) (55) Regroup & Share
Show the students what the Google Voice account looks like: what I will receive and what they
sound like. Ask if any students feel comfortable sharing their recording with the class. If so, play
them so that the students can hear what Ill receive.
Notes
Some students may not have a phone or have one is school. For these students, I will have them use
my phone.

Google Voice rubric is designed so that as long as the student calls in a response, they will not receive
less than half credit (4/8) because I really want to encourage them to try to speak more.
