Title of Lesson: Self Confidence Facing the Cookie Monster? Students will compare and celebrate the uniquesness of other students. Materials: Jars I AM Cookie sheets Markers Giant Cookie Monster Poster Developmental learning Activities: Anticipatory Set: Short Skit demonstration. One Student will represent the cookie monster and one student will be too insecure and afraid to face the cookie monster until he/she learns to be confident in themselves. Objective and Purpose: Students will learn to face their doubts & fears and learn to overcome negative voices in their lives. Input: Students will learn the importance of speaking up to their fears and doubts. They will learn the power of words when speaking to their fears and doubts. Students will learn to believe what they carry inside of them and learn to speak to negative voices with confidence and an awareness of who they are.
Modeling: As a class students will identify and list who the Cookie Monster in their life is ex: bullies, family members, adults, coaches, and life situations. Students will receive one jar and 5 I am cookie sheets and will individually write down five characteristics about themselves. Students will then decorate their Jars. Each student will learn that each of their Jars represents them. They will learn the importance of speaking what they believe is inside of their jars. Then each student will have the opportunity to face the Giant Cookie Monster Poster on the wall one by one and speak each of those five characteristics. Students will learn to not let the cookie monster still their cookie (who they are). Students will then discuss how it felt to face the cookie monster in a group setting. Checking for Understanding: Students will meet the next week and share any experiences of how they faced their cookie monster throughout that week, whether at home, in school, club sports and etc. Guided and Independent Practice: Students will practice building self-confidence by having their own personal Cookie Monster sheet to take home and to keep practicing on how to face the cookie monster. This activity can help students throughout the school year to remind them of whom they are and who they are not. Assessment/Evaluation: How are students different as a result of the lesson? Follow-up Plans: Every Month we will conduct booster sessions and discuss about how each student has grown. Each student will receive 5 more cookie sheets to add into their Jars. Reflection: I learned that this lesson can be very encouraging to all age groups.
