ISL Week 1

Choose a text and identify nouns, adjective, pronouns and their functions.
Let me begin by explaining the rules of this game. This is a very interesting game
and it is important that you work as a team to locate the hidden objects. First, you
must open your envelope and look at the clues given. However, you are only given
ten minutes to study the clues. Next, you must use the clues to locate a number of
hidden objects. There are various types of objects that we have used in this game
such as pens, watches, knives, pins, books, etc. Remember that you have to
return these objects at the end of the game. Dont get any wild ideas. We are
planning to do body checks at the exit doors!

The Function of Nouns
a) Nouns As Subjects
- We can use a noun (or pronoun) as the subject of a sentence. The subject of
a sentence with be tells who or what the sentence is about.
- E.g: 1. Barry King is the manager.
2. Computers are useful.
3. Teresa and Pete are children.
b) Nouns As Objects
- We can use a noun as the object of a verb. The object usually receives the
action of the verb.
- E.g: 1. Call the manager.
2. Please make the sandwiches now.

c) Nouns After Be
- We can use a noun after the verb be. We use this noun to define or describe
the subject of the sentence.
- E.g: 1. A studio is a small apartment.
2. The Freemans are teachers.
d) Nouns After Prepositions
- We can use a noun after a preposition. After many prepositions nouns refer to
locations.
E.g: 1. Mr Clark is on the telephone.
2. The school is in town.
3. Steve is from Boston
The Function of Pronoun
- Is a word used in place of a noun. By using a pronoun:
a) We avoid repeating a noun:
E.g: As soon as my brother met his wife, he told her the news and they
come to London.
b) We mention persons or things without actually naming them:
E.g: That is yours.
Nobody knows much about him.
Everything was new.

The Function of Adjective
- Is a word used to qualify a noun or pronoun that is to add something to its
meaning, and so to restrict its application.
