I concluded Cassandra's interview after question 12 as she struggled through most of the questions. Despite the shortened interview process, I did learn that Cassandra has a great attitude towards mathematics. She looked at and considered each question, but was happy to pass on questions she "knew" she could not be able to answer, but wanted to try the next question. In Q1, we see she recognizes part-whole relationships, but cannot yet proportionally reason the size of each portion. In Q3 and Q7 identifies more sophisticated part-whole relationships, especially in Q7 where she saw 2/3 as two parts and another part made a whole. Cassandra displayed a basic understanding of fraction equivalence in Q3, could perform simple operations in her head and recognize commutativity in Q4, and identify improper fractions and concluded that fraction's value is greater than 1 in Q7.
Misconceptions that arose from the interview were evident in Q4, where Cassandra added denominators instead of multiplying when finding one-half of one-third. Here she also drew one-half on a fraction circle and one-third on another, instead of splitting one-third into halves. In Q7 she tried drawing an improper fraction with a fraction circle, and needs to move beyond circles for visual aid. She showed a lack of understanding of place value in Q11 and Q12, and struggled to convert between place values. 223 words
