WELDING OF MARTENSITIC STEEL P91

Ferritic grades with 9% Cr

Modified 9Cr 1Mo Grades known as
ASTM T91 and P91- a martensitic steel
- Most suitable for use when steam temp.
reaches and even exceeds 540
o
C
- Compared to T22, grade 91 allows to
reduce drastically the wall thickness of tubulars
- Superior strength and higher creep properties

WELDING OF MARTENSITIC STEEL P91
The properties are giving this grade the best
maximum allowable stress value within the
temperature range 540-625
o
C.
A higher amount of finely dispersed Nb/V-
carbonitride in P91 gives higher creep strength
As expected from the chemical comp., the
structure in the HAZ is fully martensitic and may
result in cold cracking if the proper precautions
are not taken.
Welding procedure must be carefully complied
with.
WELDING OF MARTENSITIC STEEL P91
Lower carbon content in P91 material
causes excellent welding characteristics and
ease of repair
Welding processes
- GTAW
- SMAW
- SAW

WELDING OF MARTENSITIC STEEL P91
IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS

Thorough CLEANING of the joint,
filler wire avoid contamination
Very good Fit-up : Root Gap 2-4mm
No moisture
Electrode hot and baked properly
Proper flow of shielding and purging gas
WELDING OF MARTENSITIC STEEL P91
PREHEATING 200 Deg.C minimum
Thorough Interpass cleaning
Post welding cleaning
No mix-up of welding consumable filler wires
Do not scratch Temp. stick inside the joint
after checking the temp., clean the stick mark
Check polarity
Must use gas lens during TIG welding
Post Weld Heat Treatment
