Field Day!!!!!

Next Friday, May 9
th
, is our annual Field Day! Please make sure that your
child wears outdoor clothes and gym shoes that day. We start first thing in
the morning so they may want to bring a sweatshirt in case it is still chilly.
If the weather calls for a sunny day, please remember the sunscreen!!! .
They will be outside most of the day. If you sent in your money for TCBY,
they will get their TCBY sometime during Field Day.

Language Arts- Next week, we will continue
working on lesson 28 in Storytown. We will be
reading a tall tale story called "The Bunyans", and
we will finish reading the novel Stone Fox. We will
also be breaking into small groups to read short
stories that go along with the lesson. Our reading
skill will focus on figurative language, and our
grammar skill for the week will focus on adverbs.
We will not be having a spelling test, since we
tested lesson 28 words last week. In writing we
will be working on organization. Our
reading/vocabulary test will be on Thursday, May
8.

Language Arts- Next week we will be completing
the last unit of our Storytown series!!! We will
be reading and performing the Readers Theatre
story called, Discovering the Atocha. It is an
information narrative story. We will review
main idea and figurative language. The students
will finish up their writing projects and focus on
sentence fluency, organization, and revisions. In
grammar we will review contractions and
possessive pronouns, adverbs and punctuation
review. Next Thursdays spelling test will be a
review.

Math: Students will use math vocabulary to discuss
geometric solids. Students will construct geometric solids,
and calculate the volume of rectangular prisms and other
solid shapes. Vocabulary includes: vertex, edge, face,
base, and cubic units.
Science: We will begin our study of Rocks and Minerals.
We will examine various minerals and identify their
properties. We will also examine how sedimentary,
metamorphic, and igneous rocks are formed via the rock
cycle.
Social Studies: We will finish exploring the Southwest
region. Our chapter test will be next week, please see your
childs Assignment Notebook for the test information.

Math: Next week the students will be reviewing the properties of
common geometric solids. They will also be reviewing concepts and
units of volume. The students will then be guided in the
development and use of a formula for finding the volume of a
rectangular prism.
Science: The students will be taking Chapter 7 test on Monday,
May 5th. Vocabulary terms for this chapter are tropical
depression, tropical storm, hurricane, storm surge, tornado, and
vortex. Next week the students will also be starting chapter
eight, Minerals and Rocks. This chapters essential question is,
How can rocks tell us about Earths past, present, and future?
We will be revisiting this question as we progress through the
chapter.
Social Studies: The students will be finishing their study of the
Southwest region. They will be taking the test next week, so
please check your childs assignment notebook for the exact date.
*Reminder - Our homeroom will be enjoying a pizza lunch on May
8th. Students need to bring their own drink to school.

Language Arts: We have completed our Storytown textbook and taken our last
official spelling test of the year! Next week students will begin reading the
novel Shiloh and will be studying vocabulary words from the book. Students
will be working on comprehension questions and various projects related to the
novel, as well. We will also begin presenting our Fancy Folder Book Reports to
the class.
Social Studies: We continue exploring the Southwest region. Next week we will
work on identifying Native American groups that have lived in the Southwest and
analyzing the interaction of the Spanish missionaries with them. We will also be
talking about events that led to the relocation of many Native Americans. Students
will be discussing the growth of the Southwest region in the areas of cattle
ranching and the oil industry.
Science: We have completed our study of rocks and minerals and taken our
Chapter 8 Test. In Chapter 9, we will address the essential question: How is
Earths surface shaped and reshaped? We will talk about how the surface of the
Earth is continuously changing through waves, weather, and shifts of land.
Students will begin exploring this topic by discussing weathering and erosion.
