WHAT IS DIVORCE?
The legal dissolution of a marriage by a court or
other competent body
HISTORY OF DIVORCE
During Roman times, divorce was allowed but it
had to go through magistrate.
After fall of Roman Empire, divorce was rare due to
the Church.
Divorce was almost illegal but separation was ok
After reformation in Europe, divorce was only
granted if one spouse committed something wrong.
If both did something wrong, then there is no divorce.
WHY DO PEOPLE DIVORCE
According to the Huffington Post, several reasons why divorce
happens is:
Cheating - Although some couples may work things out, many
others will end the relationship if he or she cheats
Dishonesty When you lie to your partner and you know you
lie, then your partner does not know the truth. But if you
neglect to tell the truth and you know the truth, it is not seen
as dishonesty.
Addictions Many people can not forgive addictions,
specifically when your partner does not know you have
addiction.
Abuse - When you marry, you physically or sexually hurt your
partner or your children therefore the relationship will end.
Major Changes in Priority When your partner have big
changes to their identity, there will be a gap between you
and your partner.
DIVORCE RATES
According to CDC:
Marriage rate: 6.8 per 1,000 total population
Divorce rate: 3.6 per 1,000 population
About a 50% divorce rate
HOW HAS DIVORCE CHANGED OVER
TIME
According to History and Current Status of Divorce
in the United States by Frank F. Furstenberg:
In America, after Civil War, divorce increased until
1960s.
In the 1960s to late 1970s, divorce revolution, where
divorce rates increased a lot, started because of
no-fault divorce. No-fault divorce is no reason to
get a divorce.

HOW DIVORCE AFFECTS CHILDREN
According to Epidemiology of Divorce by Patricia
H. Shiono and Linda Sandham Quinn:
A growing number of children are being raised by single
parents or by stepparents (from 3.5% in 1970 to 7.8% in
1988)
According to The Impact of Divorce on Young
Children and Adolescents by Carl Pickhardt, Ph.D:
Babies and adolescence have different responses to
divorce.
Divorce effects children by learning independence faster
and making them more aggressive.


Most children (37 million, or 57.7%) lived
with their biological parents, 11.3% (7.2
million) lived in married stepfamilies, and
1.5% (1 million) lived with adoptive
parents. Approximately one quarter of
the children lived in single-parent
households; 9.5% (6 million) with a
divorced, single parent, 7.7% (4.9 million)
lived with a never-married parent, 7.6%
and (4.9 million) lived with a separated
or widowed parent, and 4.7% (3 million)
lived in a house with no parent present

WHAT CAUSES DIVORCE
According to the article Epidemiology of Divorce,
the important causes with divorce are:
The age when couples marry
Their education
The timing of the pregnancy
Teenage marriages are more easily to be divorced
other marriage.
During the 1960s divorce increased due to:
No-fault divorce
The Pill which increased premarital sex
Abortion is legal which gave no consequence to
pregnancy
HOW TO PREVENT DIVORCE
In the article Money Talks to Have Before Marriage,
there are several ways to prevent divorce.
Credit Both spouses must show their credit.
Control - Both spouses must know when people have
money, they might control others.
In the article, 5 Ways To Avoid Divorce, it tells you
how to stop divorce by:
Use money better
Work
Have more sex
Spend time apart
Do small actions for your partner


FUNCTIONALIST ANALYSIS
Functionalists believe divorce is negative.
When you divorce you blame the social institution for not
teaching good relationships and not giving enough
resources.
They would fix divorce by
The husbands parents and wifes parents must have a
good relation. Then the parents will help the husbands and
wifes marriage.

CONFLICT ANALYSIS
Rather than the marriages fault for a divorce, it is
social pressure that causes divorce.
For example, the persons parents like his girlfriend and
pressure to boy to marry her. When they marry, it was not his
choice, so they divorce.
The conflict resolution is when the couples decide
to stop arguing. Argument is through talking and
communication until both couples can decide on
what each wants and how to get it.
DIVORCE IN OTHER COUNTRIES
According to Psychology Today, in China, divorce is
rising. To fix it, marriage doctors help marriages to
prevent divorce with a 24 hour hotline.
In Muslim countries there is no-fault divorce but wife
needs consent from the husband.
In Japan, there are four kinds of divorce:
Divorce by Mutual Consent
Divorce by Family Court Mediation
Divorce by Family court Judgment
Divorce by District Court Judgment
