J ivraj Singh has been playing drums for 3 years. In this time, the Kolkata-

based 22 year old has made a distinctly quirky impact on the contemporary Indian music scene. Steve Smith of Vital Information fame put it most succinctly when he called Jivraj an alien.

Jivraj’s approach lies at the interface of afrobeat, hip hop, electronica and rock. His influences range from the music of Miles Davis, Weather Report, Fela Kuti, Meshell Ndegeocello, and J-Dilla to the films of David Lynch and Michel Gondry, the words of Franz Kafka, the sounds of trains and industrial machines.

Jivraj Singh is a founding member of the irreverent experimentalists PINKNOISE. He also currently holds the drum chair for, perhaps the most visible band in Indian rock music, SKINNy/allEy.

Jivraj’s other regular collaborations include playing with sitar virtuoso Purbayan Chatterjee, carnatic- jazz-fusion quartet KENdraKa, sarodist Pratik Srivastav and house/trance DJ Ganeshaa. STOP
