Jobs through Art
Students will:
Identify an illustrator as a job in the art field
Explain the job of an illustrator
Utilize black and white paint to create shades and
tints of colors painted onto the paper
Create painted sheets of paper to be assembled and
layered into images
Collaborate as a class to write a story
Illustrate a scene of a book
Objectives to Standards

communicate ideas.
2A. Apply knowledge of materials, techniques, and processes to
create artwork.
2B. Apply knowledge of how visual characteristics and
organizational principles communicate ideas.

Pre- Assessment
The students were given a pre-test at the
beginning of the school year in which they were
asked:
Which is a JOB for an artist?
A. Firefighter
B. Illustrator
C. Truck Driver
Results
95% chose firefighter or truck driver
leaving only 5% choosing illustrator

Discussed tints and shades
Painted large sheets of paper

Illustrate match pictures to the words

These pages were copied and assembled into a book
for each student to take home
Growth
Each student was able to identify Illustrator as a
job for an artist.

Each student illustrated their own page.

Along with help from their classroom teacher,
the students were able to identify the
occupation of an illustrator in a song
(Sung to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell)
