Client History
Buddy Break is a national program
that is dedicated to sharing hope with kids
with special needs and their families. Co-
founders Tim and Marie Kuck started the
program in 2002 because of their personal
experience with their son Nathaniel, who
suffered from Duodenal Artesia and
Craniosynestosis.
The program is geared toward special
needs kids who are called VIP kids in the
program. They are eligible for the program
is they have any physical, cognitive,
medical or hidden disability, chronic or
life-threatening illness, or medically fragile
condition. The programs are designed to
decrease stress for children with special
needs and their families, to share
encouragement, and to provide education
to teach and empower those in the
community to reach out to families who
have special needs kids.
The lives of VIP kids can be
extremely difficult for their families and
can cause a great amount of stress. Buddy
Break was created to provide respite and
care for these families who have little
support around them to give them breaks
when they need them. The program
partners with local churches and was first
introduced at the Calvary Assembly in
Winter Park, Florida.
The way the program is structured
is that there are volunteer buddies who
are paired up with a VIP child in a one on
one ratio. The term VIP arose because
often times special needs children are
labeled as outsiders or viewed differently
due to their disabilities. Buddy Breaks aims
to provide encouragement, not pity, for
these children and families and make them
feel like a VIP.
Buddy Breaks at Trinity Worship
Center was established in early 2013 by
Sarah Miller and has been growing
consistently since then. The program runs
10:00-1:00 the first Saturday afternoon of
every month and features areas such as a
sensory room, a ball room, an arts and
crafts room, and an outside playground
that the VIP children and buddies can play
in. Sarah has promoted Buddy Break
through establishing a Facebook page
labeled Buddy Break at Trinity Worship
Center and by creating promotional
brochures. She graduated from Emmanuel
College in Franklin Spring, Georgia and is
now the Childrens Pastor of Trinity
Worship Center. She runs the
programming for infants through sixth
grade students and mentors children in the
Treehouse Program.
Summary of the Problems
and Opportunities:

1. Problem: need more volunteers
With Buddy Break at Trinity
Worship Center growing in participants,
the number of volunteers also needs to
increase. The program requires each
participant to be partnered up with one
volunteer. By having this one-on-one
relationship, participants are free to do
whatever they choose, something not
always an option for them. By not having
enough volunteers for each participant,
the Buddy Break program cannot function
as it usually would.
3
2. Problem: becoming more well known
To keep Buddy Break at Trinity
Worship Center growing, getting more
participants is necessary. Coming up
with various ways to advertise is one
way of solving this problem.

Opportunities
Trinity Worship Center is located near
Elon University, which has around
6,000 college students. By having
students so close by, there are many
potential volunteers. By providing
transportation, many interested
students will be more inclined to
participate.

1. Especially focus on those
looking to work with children after
college as well as various organizations
that help special needs kids.

2. Having access to Facebook
makes reaching potential volunteers
even easier. By creating a Facebook
group and sending it out to the
students of Elon University, it is
definitely possible that there will be
students interested in getting involved
in Buddy Break at Trinity Worship
Center. Facebook is a great way to
inform people, especially students, on
various opportunities or events.

3. Since Buddy Break takes place at
Trinity Worship Center, the program
should take advantage of the
congregation members. Making more
announcements and advertisements
about the Buddy Break program
among these members could definitely
create much more interest, which
could lead to more volunteers.
Emphasizing that both children and
parents can get involved in
volunteering together would also most
likely get more families involved.

4. Printing fliers and putting them
in various places in the Burlington
community would be a great way to
spread the word. One woman, whose
son is involved in the Buddy Break
program, said she heard about the
program by word of mouth. Putting
advertisements in schools or places
that offer services for special needs
children would be essential because
that is one of the most important
audiences to target.
Past and Current PR
Efforts:
The Buddy Break program at Trinity
Worship Center has several methods of
PR. Their newest is the Facebook page,
they use this to upload photos, make
people aware of the program and also
update reminders for current participants.
They also have a weekly ad in the church
bulletin informing the members of the
church of the upcoming events for Buddy
Break. They also have go to other
churches to speak about the program and
word of mouth is their main source of
promotion. Lastly, they have a handout
provided by the National organization of
buddy break that they can hand out to
interested volunteers or participants.

Swag Bag Overview
We included Goody Bags as part of
the communications section in an
effort to attract volunteers to Buddy
Break. The first time someone
volunteers as a Buddy, they will receive
a goody bag with the custom Buddy
Break chocolate bars, custom Buddy
Break Pen, and the Buddy Break
button. This not only serves as a thank
you, but as an incentive to volunteer.
This will draw in students and after
they volunteer once and get a sense of
the program, they will likely to return.
The wrapping of the chocolate bar is
Hollywood themed (with red, black,
and white colors) and the pen is
maroon with gold print to go with the
Hollywood/ red carpet theme of our
campaign. The print on both the
chocolate bar and the pen says the
name of the program and Sarahs
contact information in order to get
involved with the program.
VIP Badge Overview
The goal of the Buddy Break buttons is
to increase PR and program awareness.
Buttons are popular around Elon, and
can be seen on students clothes as they
walk around campus, on backpacks,
and hanging up in populated areas.
Staying consistent by using the
Hollywood colors that are in the
booklet, red, gold, and black, the
button is designed to be eye-catching
and spark students curiosity. The
buttons also have Sarah Millers email
address on them, so not only are they a
good PR tactic for awareness, but they
are also a major contact point for
connecting general student awareness
to actually getting involved in the
program.
Sorority Flyer Overview:
The goal of the sorority Buddy Break
flyer is to increase awareness, and thus
increase interest, for the program.
Sororities have to complete a certain
number of service hours every
semester, and the organization
members enjoy participating in
community service in general.
Panhellenic organizations are always
looking to get involved in new and
different ways, so making the sororities
aware of Buddy Break can be a really
positive opportunity. Whether just one
member, a few members, or even an
entire pledge class gets involved,
reaching out to these girls is a sure-fire
way to rapidly increase Buddy Break
volunteer numbers.
Fraternity Flyer Overview:
The fraternity flyer was chosen to
attract the men in fraternities at Elon
University. We tailored this flyer to
them by emphasizing the fun they
would gain from working with these
children. We also wanted to make it
easy for them to contact Sarah Miller
about signing up by putting her email
address directly on the flyer. By putting
the gold stars on the sides, it tied our
theme into the flyer as well as brought
12
attention to it. We chose to use the
dark red to emphasize certain words on
the flyer. The overall flyer was simple
and to the point so that the men would
be more inclined to read it.
Education Major Flyer
Overview:
This flyer was chosen to attract
Education and Special Education
majors at Elon University. We tailored
this flyer to them by emphasizing the
experience they would gain from
working with these children. We also
wanted to make it easy for them to
contact Sarah Miller about signing up.
We put little paper slips at the end of
the flyer that they can pull off with her
email on it. By putting the gold stars on
the sides, it tied our theme into the
flyer as well as brought attention to it.
We chose to use the dark red to
emphasize certain words on the flyer.
Invitation Overview:
The postcard invitation was chosen to
attract organization members as well as
Education and Special Education
majors. They could be placed in
students mailboxes, organization
offices or houses and around campus.
It is a quick and easy way for students
to get an idea of what Buddy Break at
Trinity Worship Center is and also get
more interested in the program. We
would have boxes in Moseley that
Sarah Miller would pick up monthly
(before trainings and Buddy Break
Saturdays). Using the dark red
emphasized specific words and the gold
stars brought attention to important
words.
Fan Mail (Letter)
Overview:
We chose to create a template letter for
Sarah to use when contacting
organizations on Elons campus. We
kept it short and to the point so that
the organizations have the option to
reach out to her if they chose to do so.
It was a very simple and formal format
due to the nature of the letter.
Paparazzi Photo
Overview:
We chose to have Paparazzi Pictures as
a memory for both the volunteer and
the child because it is simple to do as
well as very meaningful. These pictures
allow the volunteer and the child to
remember their experiences at Buddy
Break at Trinity Worship Center. This
personal connection that this picture
could build with each child definitely
has the potential to bring volunteers
back to volunteer again.

Trinity Worship Center
Dear (Insert Specific Organization or Name),
My name is Sarah Miller and I am both the Youth Pastor and Buddy Break
Coordinator at Trinity Worship Center. We are located just about 2 miles from Elon. I am
looking to have more volunteers at my program and think that students from (Insert
Organization) would be perfect!
Buddy Break is a program that pairs a volunteer with a VIP child meaning that this
could be a special needs child or one of their siblings. We host this event the first Saturday
of every month from 10a.m. 1p.m. This program gives the parents of these children a
break from the responsibilities that come along with having a special needs child.
I was hoping you would like to receive more information regarding this program or
host me at your next meeting so that I could inform your members about their
opportunities with Buddy Breaks. Please let me know if this sounds of interest to you and
please feel free to contact me with any questions at all.
Sincerely,
Sarah Miller
