Unit Title: Quadratics Name: Andrew Chen

Content Area: Algebra 1 Grade Level: 9-12th
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities A REI

4. Solve Quadratic equations in one variable.
b. Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for x
2
= 49), taking square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula, and
factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation.

Big Ideas:
I would the students to understand quadratics. I want them to know that quadratics equations and their shape are relevant and useful
in our lives outside the classroom. I would also like them to understand and demonstrate the various ways of solving them and what it
means to solve them.
Unit Goals and Objectives:
Students will be able to solve quadratic equations in one variable by factoring.
Students will be able to derive the quadratic formula and identify a,b, and c in a standard form.
Students will be able to solve quadratic equations in one variable by the square root property.
Students will be able to solve quadratic equations in one variable by using the quadratic formula.
Students will be able to solve quadratic equations in one variable by completing the square.

Unit Summary:
This unit will introduce students to quadratics. They will be learning the different visual representations of various quadratic equations.
They will be discovering how to solve quadratics using various methods including factoring, completing the square, square root
property, and the quadratic formula. We will be investigating the uses of parabolas in our life and discussing how the importance of
learning these shapes will aid us.

Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective: Students
will be able to solve
quadratic equations in
one variable by
factoring.

Acceptable Evidence:
Given a quadratic
equation, students will
show the correct steps
to achieve the correct

Lesson Activities: In this lesson, students will work and
groups but make individual factoring foldable pamphlet to
help remind them the steps and different methods of
factoring. Steps will also be produced by them to achieved
the correct factored form.
Lesson 2
Student Learning
Objective: Students
will be able to solve
quadratic equations in
one variable by the
square root property.

Acceptable Evidence:
Students will

Lesson Activities: For this lesson, students will participate in
a short directed instruction and then pair up to complete a
partner worksheet. There will be two forms of the worksheet
and each partner is responsible for completing their
worksheet and explaining to their partner the procedures to
arrive at the correct solutions.

Lesson 3
Student Learning
Objective: Students
will be able to solve
quadratic equations in
one variable by using
the quadratic formula.

Acceptable Evidence:
Students will

Lesson Activities: Students will watch a short youtube
presentation of how to memorize the quadratic formula.
They will be given steps to write down and I will show them
examples of how we use the formula to solve quadratic
equations. The will then work in pairs to solve a set of
quadratic equations and match them to the correct given
quadratic graphs.
