Scholars Challenge 5

In math every time we finish a section we are given a scholar's challenge to test our
understandings of the unit. This time around i choose choice A, for this choice i and to take the
two points (-1,-4) and(5,8) to create a linear equation. Actually is very easy and simple to solve
it could be done two different ways but lets not jump ahead and begin with...
My first step was to plot these two points in a graph then try and draw a linear line that
goes through both lines. Then after that i can look for the rise over run then by doing this i can
find the rate of change and the y-intercept through a few easy steps and when you do this youll
find that the equation is y=2 x -2. But we are not finished yet, we must check our answer by
plugging in both y-intercept and x-intercept and see if they match. So youd set it up as so it
looks like this-4=2(-1)-2. then you solve the right side and youll see that it equal the same
amount as the (x,y) point -4. But were still not finished we must check to make sure the
equation works for both points. So youll plug in the second points in which it will then look like
this 8=2(5)-2. And yes it works out you have solved scholars challenge five.
But i promised two ways of solving this problem and that is what i will do. The second
way to solve this problem is to look at the two points and use logic and reasoning such as what
number that if you multiply it by the x number and add or subtract by a y-intercept you shall get
the end product of y. Then you say what factor of 5 is close to 8 and that would be 5x2 which
is10 then you say what is the difference between 8 and 10 and you get -2. finally you put it all in
one equation y=2x-2 and test that out for your last point (-1,-4) and you will see its again
correct.
this equation means that the line will go up 2 over one cross though points (-1,-4)
and(5,8). It will also be a linear function meaning it will never curve and become a perabula.
Lastly i'd like to say thank you for your time and good day.
