Display Kiss it Better by Hiawyn Oram
This week we have been making predictions.
______________ can you tell us what a prediction is?

After student has shared say:
A prediction is a good guess about what you think is going to happen next.
We can make a prediction based on the title or on the pictures.

The title of this book is Kiss it Better
What do you think this book is about based on the title?

I am looking for someone who is sitting with their legs crossed, eyes on me and raising a silent hand to call on.
(Narrate) I see that (student) is sitting down with their legs crossed, eyes on me and raising a silent hand.
______________ what is your prediction?
Why do you think that will happen?

I see that the little bear is crying. I think he might be hurt.
When I am hurt, a hug always makes me feel better. Maybe this little bear will feel better after he gets a hug from this big bear on the picture.
As I read this book I will use my experiences -things that have happened to me before- to help me make predictions.

Have you ever hurt yourself?
What makes you feel better?
What do you think will make this little bear feel better?

Sometimes, we can make predictions based on things that have happened to us.
As I read this book today, pay attention to see if what makes you feel better will make this little bear feel better too.

(Try to see if students will connect the title to what is happening in the picture, if not, remind them of the title throughout the book)

(Call on 2 - 3 students)

I do (5 minute limit):
I will read the book Kiss it Better to the students and make a prediction about what I think the book
will be about using my past experiences. I will look at the cover page of page and think aloud about
why I am making that prediction.
I see that the little bear is crying. I think he might be hurt.
When I am hurt, a hug always makes me feel better. Maybe this little bear will feel better after he gets
a hug from this big bear on the picture.

Actively listen and ask for clarifications.

We do (guided practice):

Students will share their predictions as I read the book.

What makes you feel better?
What do you think will make this little bear feel better?

We do (guided practice):

Students will share their predictions.

You do (@ Bats)

Students will read independently for 10 minutes. I will walk around asking them what they think their
book will be about and how they came up with their prediction. I will ask if they can use their
experiences to connect with what is happening in the book.
You do (@ Bats):

Students will be making predictions on a book they choose to read
independently. Through their answers I will be able to see if they
are able to use their past experiences to make a prediction.

End

After the students read independently for ten minutes, I will ask them to remind us what a prediction is.

When there is a minute left tell students:
You have a minute left of reading. Finish reading the page you are on.
(After a minute, count down to 0; students should know to put their books away in their basket.)
10, 9, 8,
(If students are not putting their books away narrate a person who knows what to do)
I see ______________ putting his book away, _________already has her arms folded...I know they are ready
7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0

Today we learned about making predictions using our past experiences.
Did someone read a book where they made a prediction based on something that has happened to them?
