EDPH306: Personal Development, Health and Physical Education.
This assignment required me to investigate and write about a topic impacting on health and physical education for learners in middle primary school.
The topic I chose was the use of Information and Communication Technology in Health and Physical Education.
Advice for teachers
If ICT is to have a positive effect on pupils attainment then the technology should support the underlying instructional approaches and that the
effective use of ICT should not mean the absence of organised structure (Cox et al., 2003, as cited in Weir & Connor, 2009, p. 168).
Teachers need to remember that the use of the technology is not the main learning outcome of the lesson, as students can often see using technology
as a novelty. It is important to note that the equipment being used is not the focus, so when planning lessons educators must be mindful of that (Weir
& Connor, 2009).
I NTEGRATI NG HPE ACROSS THE CURRI CULUM-
One strategy which should be used in Health and physical education is to integrate the subject across other curriculum areas, such as literacy, to help
students understand its importance. Tasks that could be included in a health literacy unit of work could include building websites and looking at
health related articles in web based media (McCuaig, Quennerstedt & Macdonald, 2013).

Comment [N1]: With ICT being such a
big part of schooling in the 21
st
century, it
is important for teachers to provide
authentic ICT experiences for students
Comment [N2]: Integrating ICT across
the curriculum is one strategy that
teachers can use to engage students and
expand their opportunities for learning

Digital
Video
- Using digital video, students will film themselves performing
a specific skill, such as the overarm throw. The video can then
be used to peer-review, for students to see what they are doing
right and wrong or to provide positive peer modelling. Then, if
you wish, you can take the videos and use a computer program
to slow the action down and replay as needed.
- Using websites such as YouTube or other instructional
websites, students can view an action such as a fundamental
motor skill to see how it is correctly carried out, to then
incorporate this into their own technique.

Web 2.0
Technology

-Students create a marketing campaign/strategy based on the
concept of edutainment which will educate the public about a
particular health concern. A variety of Web 1.0 and Web 2.0
technologies will be used as possible media for education and
entertainment. All enabling qualities will be explored and
addressed (Usher, 2013, p. 15).
-Using a website builder, students will create a website which
focuses on a specific health issue. Guidelines as to what needs
to be included could be: history, cultures and countries
associated, current issues, did you know facts and background
information (Usher, 2013, p. 15).

Comment [N3]: This table outlines
teaching and learning strategies for a
variety of technologies. It shows that I have
the knowledge to successfully implement
teaching strategies for using ICT to expand
curriculum learning opportunities for
students.
