Surrealism:
The Surrealism movement began in Paris with the publication to the Surrealist Manifesto in 1924. The term "Surrealism" was coined by French poet Guillaume Appollinaire who used the term "sur-raliste" to describe works of art that surpass realism. Surrealism developed from the Dada movement, but was di"erent in respect to the fact that Dada wished to destroy the past while Surrealism wished to use the past to make positive suggestions for the future. In addition, the works of Sigmund Freud became of great importance to the Surrealists, who included Joan Mir, Salvador Dal, and Andr Breton. Surrealism is still practiced in Belgium today.
