The Crimson Thread of Kinship
whatever happens, Australia is a part of
the Empire right to the full. Remember that
when the Empire is at war, so is Australia at
warI want to make it quite clear that all our
resources in Australia are in the Empire and
for the Empire and for the preservation and
the security of the Empire.'
- Joseph Cook, Australian Prime Minister, August 1914
The Crimson Thread
of Kinship
Andrew Fisher, who became Prime Minister a
month after Australia entered the war, vowed that
Australia would "stand beside our own to help
and defend [the empire] to the last man and the
last shilling.
- August 1914

"mateship", not just in law.
"Australia has so far achieved nothing great from
the national standpoint. It cannot be said to have
failed because it has not yet been called upon ...
the Australian must be prepared in the event of
great emergency, to die for something or for
somebody."

Baptism of Fire
It is our baptism of fire ... Australia knows
something of the flames of war, but its realities
have never been brought so close as they will be
in the near future." -
Sydney Morning Herald 8th August 1914

Baptism of Fire
Although Most Australians were very
excited about the war, there were some
who though that Australia should have
kept out of Britains war

Imagine that you were an Australian male, aged
22 in 1914. Do you think you would have gone off
to the War?
Give reasons for your answer
Men of all ages and levels of physical
fitness crowded to the recruiting centres to
enlist in naive enthusiasm. The British
asked for 20,000 Australians - by
December 1914, 52,561 had enlisted.
Women also joined in, setting up
charitable voluntary groups to provide
support and "comforts" to victims of war.
Great emotion surrounded the departure
of the first troops. Ships were boarded in
Sydney on 20 October 1914. The 'Ovieto'
was given an enthusiastic send off in
Melbourne.
