Topic/Theme: Writing
Objectives Listening Students will listen and share ideas with peers while discussing the reading topics and their essay. They will be able to verbalize their thinking. Speaking Reading Students will read two mentor texts and read classmates essays and identify the components of an argumentative essay and points need editing. Writing Students will discuss essay prompts and choose their own topic to write. Bridging What background knowledge do the students already have? Students have already composed essays in previous classes. They have background knowledge on parts of an essay. What will you do to activate or link students prior knowledge or experience to upcoming content? The class will begin with a discussion on the fairness of interviews. They can share their opinions, and I will have them think about how to persuade others to accept their ideas when writing an essay. Then, I will have them read a model essay about an interview. Engagement with New Material What will you do to engage students in the active learning of the new material? I will provide two mentor texts, a good one and a bad one. I will tell them that the two essays are not perfect and ask what they will do to improve them. What will you do to ensure that all students are engaged? Check the students understanding by asking them to explain to me. For example, I will ask students if they agree with the writers arguments and discuss the topics of the reading articles. I will let them share opinions and make suggestions so that they will not just listen to what I say. Application What opportunities will you provide students to practice and apply their knowledge/skill to meet the objectives for this lesson? To apply to other contexts? After they read and discuss the mentor text on the content and the structures, we will summarize the patterns and components of argumentative essays. Later, I will provide essay prompts for students to discuss and practice giving supporting ideas and opposing ideas. They will eventually choose one topic or create their own topic to write. Assessment How will you assess their learning of the objectives? Assessment will be done informally while students are discussing, and editing and formally with a rubric. The essay they compose in this class will also be an assessment for preparation for the next class. Closing How will you help students Students are going to reflect on what they learned via brief feedback recap the learning and link it back to the original purpose of the lesson? forms. They will review what they have done, state what they learned, and what needs to be improved. Technology If applicable for your context and your lesson, how will you meaningfully integrate technology into your lesson?
PowerPoint will be used to shown the course content.
