Invitation or Introduction: The teacher will ask students to sit on the carpet for a fun activity. The
teacher will have birthday hats to pass out to the students. The teacher will explain that Dr. Seusss
birthday is coming up and that today they are going to read a book that he wrote in honor of his birthday.
To engage the students the teacher will read Theres a Wocket in my Pocket by Dr. Seuss. Alright class, I
have something fun planned for us today. I need everyone to come to the carpet. (wait for appropriate
action) Thank you. Ok, guess what? One of our favorite authors is having a birthday. Dr. Seuss!!! His
birthday is next week and we are going to celebrate it today. So, I have fun birthday hats for us to wear. I
am going to read one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books, Theres a Wocket in my Pocket. I want you to turn
those listening ears on!!! Listen for our rhyming words. The teacher will read the book.
Teacher Modeling: After the teacher finishes reading the book, she will transition into the teaching
portion of this lesson. The teacher will ask the students what stood out to them most in this book. The
teacher will remind the students that they have been working on rhyming words. The teacher will ask if
the students noticed the rhyming words. The teacher will transition into modeling. The teacher will have a
poster board with pockets on it. The teacher will pass out rhyming cards to the students. The teacher will
give directions and model this activity to the class. The teacher will take a rhyming card a demonstrate
what to do. The teacher will read the card and find the pocket with the correct rhyming match. The
teacher will ask several students to do the same thing. Now we are going to do a fun activity. I have a
rhyming board. I am going to give you each a card. I want you to read your card and find its rhyming
word. Then you will place your card in the correct pocket. Got it, get it, good?! I will show you first. The
teacher will model this activity.
Independent Practice: The teacher will have the students take a stack of rhyming cards. At their table
they will take their stack and find all the rhyming words and pair them at their table. Now, we are going to
practice. You have a stack of rhyming cards. I want you to find all the rhyming pairs and place them on
your desk. Does anyone have any questions?
Assessment and Reflection: The teacher assess the students on rhyming words by using a worksheet.
The teacher will read the directions aloud to the class and ask the students to complete the worksheet. The
teacher will read the choices aloud for students who are unable to read the words. The teacher will collect
the worksheets and go over the answers with the class. You all are great! Now, You get to do this on your
own. I have a worksheet for you. You will read the three words and then circle the two words that rhyme.
