Type 2 diabetes, formally known
as "adult onset," is the most common form
of diabetes. Originally it was unheard for
children and adolescents to be diagnosed
with type 2, but now it is a scary and
quickly increasing diagnosis.
Type 2 diabetes is insulin resistant

o Children need to drink more water
and avoid drinks and foods high in
calories, sugar, and fat, which
contain little to no nutritional value
((The American Diabetes
Association, 2014).
Children need to be physically active.
o Children need to be physically
active to shed extra calories which
can cause excessive weight gain.
o Data indicates an obese teenager
has a 70% greater chance of
becoming an obese adult; physical
activity allows a child's body to
balance caloric intake and output
(Kovar, et al 2012, p. 12).
Prevention
How can you prevent it?

Help your child maintain a healthy body
weight.
o Type 2 diabetes develops mainly in
children whom are obese or
overweight (Weigensberg & Goran,
2009, p. 1743).
o Obesity rates in children have
tripled since 1976-1980 and 80% of
children diagnosed with type 2
diabetes are overweight (Kovar,
Combs, Campbell, Napper-Owen,
& Worrell, 2012, p. 9, 90).
Provide your child with a proper diet.
o Children need to eat more
natural/healthy food, such as fruits
and vegetables, which will provide
them with the vitamins and
nutrients they need to grown
properly.
