Roger Penrosen teos The Emperors New Mind käsittelee tietoisuuden mekanistisen
paradigman mahdottomuutta. Penrose osoittaa teoksessaan, että on mahdotonta, että
ihmisen mieli olisi
monimutksiten laskelmien sattumanvarainen lopputulos. Penrosen mukaan tietoisuus on
ilmiö, jossa maailmankaikkeuden varsinainen luonne tulee ilmi. Penrosen mukaan
maailmankaikkeutta on mahdotonta ymmärtää ilman tietoisuutta. Penrose kirjoittaa:

”One can argue, that an universe governed by laws, that do not allow conscioussness is
no universe at all. I would even say, that all the mathematical descriptions of the universe
that have been given so far must fail this criterion. It is only the fenomenon of
conscioussness that can conjure a putative, ”theoretical” universe into actual existence! It
is indeed obvious that the consciouss mind cannot work like a computer, even though
much of what is actually involved in mental activity might do so. It is the kind of
obvioussenss, that a child can see.What happens to each of the streams of conscioussness
after we die; where was it before before each was born; why do we perceive at all; why is
there a universe in which we can actually be etc. awakening self awareness. How could
one even begin to explain the substance of such problems to an entity that was not self-
