Sixth Sunday of Easter (1885)

The doctrine of prayer must be diligently urged. A good many misconceptions

prevail regarding prayer. The world mocks prayer. Romanists address prayers to dead
saints. Many hold vain babbling as a godly prayer. Many hold prayer as something
meritorious. How disinclined are we often to pray, etc.

John 16:23-30

Two important items from the doctrine of prayer;

1. why should we pray?
a. it is God's will: we should give Him glory with our prayer, that He alone is the
giver of every good thing, and should take our refuge in Him in all our requests;
b. God has promised He will hear us; this promise is gracious and rich
1
;
c. our multiple great distresses should urge us to pray without ceasing
2
;

2. how should we pray?
a. in the name of Jesus,
b. as dear children, boldly and with all confidence.
