Fifth and sixth grade stu-
dents certainly have some-
thing to be proud of this
year: some of the highest
standardized test scores in
the country which is getting
notice from the Diocese of
Lansing, the University of
Notre Dame, and the North-
west Evaluation Association.
Sacred Heart uses the NWEA
MAP test, which is a stand-
ardized test used by some of
the best public and private
schools across the country
to measure academic
growth. The test scores for
Sacred Hearts fifth and
sixth graders are staggering.
In Reading, Sacred Hearts
fifth grade average score is
224.5 and the sixth grade
score is 226.5 while the aver-
age score for a high school
student entering senior year of
high school is 223.7.
While state and national politi-
cians and local school districts
argue about school education
standards, Sacred Heart
School is educating their stu-
dents to the only standard
they know, educating each
student to their God given
potential.
The table compares Sacred
Hearts 5th and 6th grade class
averages to the averages of
high school sophomores or jun-
iors in the United States.

This past winter, Sacred
Hearts fourth and fifth
graders participated in the
Tri County Science Olympi-
ad. The event included
teams from schools all
across Hillsdale, Lenawee,
and Monroe counties. Par-
ticipants competed in
events such as tower build-
ing and fossil identification.
The Sacred Heart Fourth
grade received the Sports-
manship Award for their
outstanding effort and atti-
tudes. The fifth grade stu-
dents, who were competing
in individual events, were so
successful in the events they
participated in that they
earned a 2nd Place finish in
the team event. Their coach,
Mr. Martin Korth, was very
proud of all the participants.

Catholic education is making a come-
back in Hudson and in the Diocese of
Lansing. This academic year showed the
first diocesan wide growth in enrollment
in almost a decade. Schools in the dio-
cese are projecting another enrollment
increase going into the next school year.
This is exciting news!
Sacred Heart School is growing at a rate
higher than other diocesan schools. The
opening enrollment at Sacred Heart in
2012/2013 was the lowest it had ever
been; however, as the school year went
on enrollment increased and the year
closed with more students than it had
enrolled in the previous year. This aca-
demic year showed another growth in
enrollment when the school year began
and more students enrolled throughout
the year.
We, like most schools in the Diocese of
Lansing, are projecting enrollment
growth for the next school year because
parents are making a choice to invest in
their childrens future. Sacred Heart
has always been known for its loving
and caring atmosphere and now it is
also being recognized for its outstand-
ing academic programs.
With an increase in enrollment comes a
greater need for financial assistance.

len through the University of
Notre Dame.
The project explored the ben-
efits of providing intensive
reading interventions to more
students than just those at-
risk of falling much below
grade level.
The results were incredible,
the research project showed
that when given one on one or
small group reading interven-
tion, students significantly
improved their Reading test
scores and their attitudes
toward reading improved.
Thelen hopes this research will
help Catholic schools dedicate
their resources to helping
more students achieve their
reading potential. The re-
search will be posted on Notre
Dames website this summer.

We are reinvesting in greater financial aid
opportunities to our school families. We are
inviting our alumni to invest in existing or
create new scholarships that will be availa-
ble to our families. This is a great opportuni-
ty to remember loved ones who have passed
or to recognize someone in your life who
made a difference, by establishing a Sacred
Heart scholarship in their name. Included in
this newsletter is more information about
these new scholarship opportunities. Please
prayerfully consider contributing to or creat-
ing a new scholarship opportunity for a fami-
ly who is seeking a Catholic education.
didnt think she was always my favorite
teacher while I was in her class, but years
later I valued the lessons in discipline and
responsibility that she taught me. The edu-
cation I received at Sacred Heart taught me
the value of discipline and hard work.
Catholic education is a big part of Jeffs
family. My grandmother attended school
at Catholic Hill/Sacred Heart, my mother
attended Sacred Heart, both of my daugh-
ters attend(ed) Sacred Heart. When I was
in third and fourth grade, Mrs. Hartley and
Mrs. Malarney were my teachers; I dont
know what I would have done then if some-
one would have told me then that I would
later marry their replacement. Jeff is mar-
ried to Sacred Hearts 2/3 grade teacher
Mrs. Judy Schutte.
The Sacred Heart School Parent
Group sponsored this years Family
Fun Night: A Blast From The Past.
Families gathered at the school on a
Friday night to learn about the lives
of early settlers and participated in
activities and crafts of the time peri-
od. Children and parents worked at
tin punching, candle making, and
butter churning. After the event,
families enjoyed an ice cream social
with home made ice cream.
Sacred Heart Parish celebrated their First Holy Com-
munion on Sunday, May 2. The 16 First Communicants
were prepared by Mrs. Judy Schutte, 2
nd
grade teacher
at Sacred Heart School and Mr. Joshua Gonzales, Direc-
tor of Religious Education. Congratulations to: Ainsley

This editions featured alumni is Jeff
Schutte who attended Sacred Heart in
the 70s. Jeff has many memories from
Sacred Heart. One of his best memories
is of the plays that the school put on.
I remember the elaborate plays that
we did on the stage. We would bring all
the chairs into the gym and it would be
packed when we put on a play. One
year, we did Youre a Good Man Char-
lie Brown and I was Schroeder. Marcia
Monahan played Lucy and I remember
her singing while I pretended to play the
piano.
Jeffs favorite teacher from Sacred
Heart was Mrs. Lucy Hartley. I probably
