Time Line
First: Fern rescues the runt of the pig litter and is given
permission to raise him. She names him Wilbur.
Next: Wilbur grows healthy and strong. He is getting too large
to stay at Ferns home.
Then: Wilbur goes to live at Ferns uncle Homers Farm. He
meets the other farm animals and makes friends with Charlotte
the spider.
Soon: Wilbur learns that pigs get slaughtered. His friends on the
farm help to save him.
Next: Templeton helps Charlotte find words to write in her
spider web about Wilbur.
Later: Everyone marvels at how wonderful Wilbur is due to the
words Charlotte wrote about him in his web.
In the End: Wilbur wins a prize at the fair! Charlotte lays her sac
of eggs, but she is weak and dies.
Finally: Wilbur gets to live in the barn at Zuckermans because
Charlotte saved his life. Charlottes egg sac hatches in the
spring and Wilbur lives in the barn happily with his new spider
friends.

Health and Fitness
Morning: Wilbur will take a brisk walk each morning. For breakfast he
will have the scraps from the Zuckermans table including: buttermilk,
fruit salad, toast, and some doughnuts. Wilbur has water nearby to
drink as needed.

Lunch: Wilbur will take nap in the afternoon sun. For lunch he will have
the scraps from the Zuckermans lunch: whole milk, an apple core, half
a sandwich, and some cookies. Wilbur has water nearby to drink as
needed.

Afternoon: Wilbur will play in the mud. This will be needed to keep him
cool in the afternoon heat.

Dinner: For dinner he will have the scraps from the Zuckermans table:
milk, cherry pie slice, stale bread, left over salad, steak slices and some
cookies. Wilbur has water nearby to drink as needed.

Wilbur goes to bed early to stay rested and will repeat this daily! Some
days he will practice his leaps and show off for guests that come to see
that humble pig! To reduce stress Wilbur talks often with his spider
friends. He is a worrier so he needs exercise and healthy diet to keep
him in tip top shape and keep his worries at bay!

Dear Fern,
How are you? You are so lucky you got to raise a baby piglet. Was it
hard? The way you went to save Wilbur when he was a runt was very
brave! I bet Wilbur is so grateful that you are such a brave girl.

Do you miss Wilbur now that he lives at your Uncle Homers Farm? Was
it difficult to have him leave your home? I dont have any pets, you are
so lucky! What was your favorite thing about being the mama to a baby
piglet? Did Wilbur grow quickly?

It must have been so cool to see the words written in the spider web at
the farm. Did you ever see the spider that wrote them? What are the
other animals like when you go visit the farm?

I hope someday I get a pet. I think I would most like to have a dog.

Your Friend,
Ms. Devanney
P.S. Did you really understand what all the animals were saying when
you were at the farm? Do they really talk?
Writing

Charlottes Web is like the book Because of Winn-
Dixie. There are many similarities between the two books.
Both books have girl characters that saved the life of
an animal. Opal saved the dog Winn-Dixie and Fern saved the pig
Wilbur. Both of the animals love the girl that saved them.
Another similarity is that in both books the girls have
to face the challenge of what happens if and when they are separated
from the animal they love so dearly. Fern is able to visit Wilbur when he
moves to the farm. Opal is able to be reunited with Winn-Dixie after he
goes missing.
Some differences are the animals are not the main
characters in both stories. Also, in Charlottes Web all the animals talk
and as the reader we can understand their conversation. Winn-Dixie is
not a character that speaksbut barks. Because of Winn-Dixie is
realistic fiction and Charlottes Web is just fiction.
I really enjoyed both books. They were interesting
stories that make me want to keep reading!

Religion
In this story I see many cases of good and bad
behavior. Charlotte and Fern always treat other characters in the story
with respect. Fern is able to give Wilbur the gift of keeping his life. She
is using the commandment Thou shall not kill and offers to raise
Wilbur herself to keep him from harms way. Charlotte also works to
give Wilbur long life by writing words in her web. She treats others in
the barn the way she would want to be treated, the golden rule!
Although Templeton is not always the kindest or
fastest, he is usually able to be talked into doing the right thing. The
most thoughtful thing he did was sacrifice his rotten egg and have it be
broken so that the smell would turn Avery away and he wouldnt
capture Charlotte.
Mr. Zuckerman cares for the animals on his farm taking
care of them, feeding them, and helping them to grow. His wife, Mrs.
Zuckerman, takes the time to give Wilbur a bath so that he will really
look great at the fair. She is taking the time to treat Wilbur as he
mother treated their pigs before going to the fair each year.

Family Life Communication
In the story Charlottes Web by E.B. White some
characters communicate well. Fern and her family work well together.
They care for one another. Ferns brother Avery can be mischievous
and he and Fern argue but, it is no different than how siblings
communicate.
The animals all communicate well except for
Templeton, he does not ever seem to make kind choices or think of
others. He does only when he is bribed.
Wilbur and Charlotte have a great communication.
They care for one another. This helps Wilbur as when he is feeling
nervous or needs a little confidence boast, Charlotte is always there to
help and give him encouragement.
