Step II A. Description of School and Teaching,
Administrative, or Pupil Services Situation
Description of Position:
I am currently student teaching second grade at Westview Elementary.
School location/Setting:
Platteville School District is a rural district in Platteville Wisconsin. There are two elementary
schools, one middle school and one high school.
Demographics:
There are currently 225 students enrolled at Westview Elementary School. 4.4% are Asian or
Pacific Islander, 2.7% Hispanic, 6.2% Black, 85.8% White, and 0.9% American Indian or Alaska
Native. 8.0% of the student population is students with disabilities. 40.9% of students are
economically disadvantaged and 1.8% are limited English proficient
District Goals:
It is the goal of the Westview staff to provide a supportive and positive learning
environment. They are committed to meeting the individual needs of their students by
empowering them to be respectful, responsible, and productive lifelong learners.

Step II B. Description of Goal to be addressed
Goal: I will research and implement reading comprehension strategies so that student learning
increases, as well as student interest and enjoyment of reading and language arts.

Step II C. Rationale for the Goal: Links to Professional
Situation and Wisconsin Educator Standards
Goal: will research and implement reading comprehension strategies so that student learning
increases, as well as student interest and enjoyment of reading and language arts.
Rationale for the Goal and Link to Educational Situations: Westview elementary values the
use of a balanced literacy approach in each classroom. Teachers divide up 90 minutes a day so
students are able to participate in math and the balanced literacy framework. I want to
implement reading comprehension strategies into small group instruction and literacy centers so
that students read to learn.
Implementing reading comprehension strategies into small group instruction will scaffold
students understanding that there are steps they need to take to make sense of text. The purpose
of implementing comprehension strategies in small group instruction is so that students are with
peers at their same level, the teacher is able to facilitate discussion about what was read, and
students will feel comfortable being active in the conversations. During small group
instruction the students will practice the following important components of reading
comprehension: monitoring comprehension, using metacognitive strategies, using graphic and
semantic organizers, answering questions, generating questions, recognizing story structure, and
summarizing what they read. I intend to provide many opportunities for students to practice
reading comprehension strategies alone, or in pairs in a variety of literary centers.
Licensure standard(s) addressed in your plan:
Teacher:(1) The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures
of the disciplines he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these
aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils.
Teacher:(2) The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and
provides instruction that supports their intellectual, social and personal development.
Teacher:(3) The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning
and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs
of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.
Teacher:(6) The teacher uses effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques
as well as instructional media and technology to foster active inquiry, collaboration and
support interaction in the classroom.
