Band and Orchestra Tryouts and Fittings

During the next couple weeks in school, your child will be
able to observe and tryout a few instruments for band and
orchestra. On Thursday, May 29
th
, there will band/orchestra
signups at Martino Junior High from 5-8PM. Watch your
students backpack for more information.

Language Arts- Next week will be our last Storytown
week! We will be working on lesson 30. We will be
reading a reader's theater story called "Discovery the
Atocha in class, and we will be breaking into small
groups to read other short stories that pair with the
lesson. Our reading skill will review main idea and
details and figurative language. Our grammar skill for
the week will review irregular verbs, contractions and
possessive pronouns, adverbs, and punctuation. In
spelling we will review words with silent letters, words
with greek and latin word parts, homophones, and
words with prefix + base + suffix. In writing we will be
working on revising, sentence fluency, and organization.
Our reading/vocab and spelling tests will be on Friday,
May 30.

Language Arts- Next week we will be finishing
up reading the novel, Old Yeller. The students
will have a quiz over chapters 7-9 on Wednesday
when they get back. They will be responsible for
knowing the vocabulary for chapters 7-9 as well as
answer and look up comprehension questions. I
hope to finish the book by the end of the week.
We will be watching the movie, Old Yeller and
comparing and contrasting the book to the movie.
We will be reviewing and playing games with the
different parts of grammar that we have learned
this year. We will also be practicing our spelling
skills throughout the week!!

Math: We will complete Unit 12 by comparison-
shopping using rates. Our final Unit test for Math
will be coming up next week as well, please check your
childs Assignment Notebook for the exact date.
Science: We will complete our study of changes to
the Earths surface. We will explore volcanoes and
earthquakes, which can cause rapid changes.
Social Studies: We will complete our exploration of
the West region this week by discussing the climate
and resources of the region.

Math: Next week the students will be taking the
Unit 12 test. Please check your childs assignment
notebook for the exact date. The students will be
solving rate problems, finding factor pairs, comparing
and ordering integers, finding equivalent capacities,
calculating volume, and solving open sentences.
Science: Next week the students will be taking the
test on Chapter 8. After this, the students will
begin to research volcanoes and earthquakes,
focusing on the causes and effects.
Social Studies: Next week the students will be
taking the test on the Western region (Chapter 9).

Language Arts: The students continue to read Shiloh. They are completing vocabulary,
spelling, and comprehension activities related to the novel. We are still working on
Character Keys to describe the main characters and their actions, as well as a persuasive
writing project about a pet. We continue to present our Fancy Folder Book Reports to the
class. We will be finishing up Shiloh next week and beginning our final project, which is
booklet on how to take care of a dog. We will have a quiz on Shiloh towards the end of
the next week.
Social Studies: We have begun our final chapter in Social Studies! Students are learning
about the varied landforms and bodies of water of the West. We are also discussing
earthquakes, hot springs and geysers, and the formation of islands in the West. Students
will also describe the wide variety of climates found in that region. Our test should take
place at the end of next week. Please check your childs assignment notebook to verify that
date.
Science: We have taken our Chapter 9 Test and will begin reading Chapter 10: Using
Natural Resources. Students will familiarize themselves with the vocabulary words for the
chapter and develop an understanding of the properties of earth materials including types of
soil.
