DESIGN BRIEF
Client Company:
National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA)
Target Consumer:
society
Problem Statement:

The National Recreation Park Association (NRPA) has asked
your team to develop a solution to a growing problem in
their parks. The association has placed dumpsters for
recyclable material throughout the parks. They have a
sorting facility; however, they need the device that will sort
the recyclable material.

Design Statement:

Design, model, and test a device that will separate recyclable
materials.

Constraints:
1. Separation process must be fully automated.
2. Must successfully separate commingled
recyclable materials into individual holding
bins.
3. Recyclable materials include 3 different in.
material spheres totalling 15. Examples could
include steel, aluminum, wood, opaque plastic,
and clear plastic.
Must be efficient 2 minute max for completion of sorting
process.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
[Answer the conclusion questions here. Use complete sentences with proper grammar and spelling.]

1. What was the most challenging aspect of this design problem?
The most challenging aspect when it came to designing was making everything just
right. Take the tetor-toter for an example. You cant tighten the screws all the way
because it wont drop back is something heavy was drop on it would just drop and sit
there. So we had to loosen the screws and drop the heavy marble on it and see if it
would sway back and come back it. We re-did the tetor-toter approximately seven times
before we got it right. Even at that point it wasnt yet perfect. It was really just difficult to
construct the designs we sketched.

2. What are some creative changes that you would make to the design solution if you
could start over?
I would have made more ramps for the marbles to go down. Id also find an extremely
sufficient and good stopper so that I can conduct a good light test. I also would of
constructed an better and more efficient tetor-toter.

REFLECTIONS
[How well did you accomplish your objectives? What would your team do differently with your design
solution and why? Do the results fulfill the problem statement? Provide a brief explanation of what you
learned, the challenges of working in a design team, and the purpose of the design problem. The reflection
should be 200-250 words.]
My objective was not well executed whatsoever. I failed to complete building it and never completed a code
that made it run. So our results was not able to fulfill the problem statement. Overall we had really bad time
management. We did not give ourselves enough time to execute what we needed to in the given amount of
time. With our design we would try to think our sketch out more thoroughly rather than write down
anything so that I could just start building. The purpose of the design problem gives us what we need to
execute we just to do better when finding the solution, and you have to make sure when working in a
design TEAM that both people or everyone is aiding in brainstorming, sketching, constructing, and etcetera
because when you only have one person working the design takes longer to execute because theres only so
much one person can do. Its hard to come up with a wide variety of solutions when only one person is truly
brainstorming possible solutions for the problem presented. So over all there were many of things we
could have done differently to fulfil the problem that was presented before us.

RECOMMENDATION PAGE
[What recommendations would you make for this project next year for the teacher to change?]
[What recommendations would you make to a student in this class who must do this project next year?]
Theres no need for the teacher to change anything about the project. Its all on the students and them
having good time management because time management is key to your success in fulfilling the problem
statement. Wasting an whole day and not getting anything done can hurting you really bad. Youll get
behind and be playing catch up every class day after.
