Provisional Title
The 2 Portrait Project
Abstract (A concise summary of project). No more than 250 words.
The aim of my project is to create a brief moment where two human beings can connect and interact in a positive way by giving them 2 in return for their portrait.
Literature search and contextualisation (Provisional bibliography)
To capture that moment of positive interaction of the homeless on the streets of London.
To create a series of portrait images of homeless people in London.
Working Methodology (How you intend to carry out the project, logistical implications)
Normally the homeless can be found in the following places:
Waterloo Railway Station Temple Tube Station Covent Garden Ealing Broadway Central London My aim is to get out and walk once Ive taken the tube in search of them.
Anticipated Outcomes (Portfolio submission, book publication, degree show exhibition)
Possible Anticipated outcomes of images will be submitted as a portfolio and also displayed at the degree show exhibition.
Resources Required- (In this section consider University and personal resources)
Proposed Timescale and schedule (A double module consists of approximately four hundred hours of work, please schedule 7 months here)
Financial Requirements (provide a budget)
Instead of photographing 130 portraits I will be lowering it down to 10. Considering I am on a student budget, I have to limit my handout funds.
10 Portraits = 20
Relevant permissions (release forms, contracts)
Release forms and contracts will not be needed, as I will be asking homeless people to take their portrait in exchange for 2.
Ethical considerations (please consider how your work will be viewed and where if it is of a sensitive nature or includes marginalised communities or children)
In terms of where my project is, I believe it is of a sensitive nature of homeless people who have hit a wall in their for whatever reason it may be, we have all had low points in our lives. Unfortunate for some not all get their feet back on track and are all out of options.
Problems Anticipated (risk analysis)
Problems anticipated are finding enough homeless people to create a series of images.
Further Information- (Use this section to describe your project more fully. Please attach supplementary pages and apendices as needed)
I recently discovered the $2 street photography project of Thomas Hawk and was inspired enough to share and try it myself in the city of London. For the past few years Thomas has been working on a project of his called $2 Portraits and he has a gallery covering the years of this on-going project on Flickr.
His $2 Portrait Project evolved from being panhandled while photographing city streets - anytime anyone asks him for money out on the street, he offers them $2 for their portrait.
After a humbling experience one night with a guy on a bridge in Portland, he decided to change his behavior towards the less fortunate. He evolved and decided that if he was going to be out shooting the streets, he should use his experiences on the street for positive human interaction. Thomas decided not to worry about what people did with the money when they asked for it and not to care if it actually helped them or not. He decided simply to use an opportunity on the street to interact with another human being and turn something that had been a negative experience for him into a rewarding positive experience.
Since his revelation Thomas has taken about 130 portraits of people in this project. Largely the response by those he has photographed has been positive and engaging. More than just taking their photographs, he takes a few minutes with each person to talk to them, to learn a bit about their situation and to share those details along with the photographs he posts. He has found the people that he encounters and photographs are generally happy and pleased to be a part of the project.
Instead of photographing 130 portraits I will be lowering it down to 10. Considering I am on a student budget, I have to limit my handout funds.
This Idea has really inspired me and is why I have decided to take on this project.
