Volleyball is more than a sport; it is a way of life. Volleyball is a sport that
both boys and girls can play indoors and outdoors. People can play as doubles,
triples, or as many as the team prefers. Yet, normally the limit is six people per side.
The more common way to play is indoors with six people per side. It is a game
where the side gets three touches on the ball. There can be less than three touches
but no more. Volleyball relates to geometry in multiple ways, including area and
perimeter.

The first way geometry and volleyball are connected is through area. Many
area dimensions can be found on a court. By multiplying the base and height, the
area of the entire court including both sides is 162m
2
. Therefore, the area of half the
court would be 81m
2
. Within the half court, there are two unequal rectangles. The
area of the first section from the net to the 10ft line is 27m
2
. The second rectangle is
from the 10ft line to the service line. This area is 54m
2
. This information shows that
area can be found in many parts of the volleyball court.

Another way geometry relates to volleyball is through perimeter. Perimeter
is important for volleyball in many ways. One way it is important is because it shows
how far a player can step when serving the ball. In addition, the perimeter shows
where players can and can not serve the ball to the opposing side. Perimeter is
calculated by P = 2(l+w). The perimeter of the entire court is 54m. The perimeter of
the 10ft line to the net line is 24m. Then the 10ft line all the way to the service line is
30m. This information shows that perimeter is easy and important to find on a
court.

Area and perimeter are both ways that show volleyball and geometry are
connected. The vast majority of sports that require a court are all related to

geometry. People can find the area or perimeter of any court and many of the field
