Who was Pythagorus?
Contribution to Mathematics
Pythagorus was a Greek philosopher/mathematician.
His main contribution to math was the Pythagorean
theorem. The theorem can only be used on finding the
hypotenuse of right triangles. The theorem states that
a
2
+ b
2
= c
2
. The theorem can also be used to find the
legs. The equation to find the legs is c
2
- b
2
= a
2
.
The Theorem
Below in the diagram, this shows one of the ways to
explain the theorem. In the diagram, a equals 4, b
equals 9, and c equals 5. When you use the tile
squares, they have to be put in place so that they make
a right triangle. Also, the number of tiles in the square
equal their number to the 2nd power. Then, you use the
equation a
2
+ b
2
= c
2
, so in this case, it would be
16+9=25.
