Next Generation Science Standards Collection Development Proposal
Name: Nicky Fairless Date: 13 August 2013 Project Title: NGSS Collection Proposal Project Summary: As the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are being incorporated into the K-12 curriculum beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, it is important the school library/media center has the materials that support these standards. With a budget of $1500, the focus of this proposal is to strengthen the core collection that addresses the section of MS-ESS2 Earths Systems of the Next Generation Science Standards at the middle school level. The six objectives within the MS-ESS2 Earths Systems section are: MS-ESS2-1. Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earths materials and the flow of energy that drives this process MS-ESS2-2. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earths surface at varying time and spatial scales MS-ESS2-3. Analyze and interpret data on the distribution of fossils and rocks, continental shapes, and seafloor structures to provide evidence of the past plate motions MS-ESS2-4.Develop a model to describe the cycling of water through Earths systems driven by energy from the sun and the force of gravity MS-ESS2-5. Collect data to provide evidence for how the motions and complex interactions of air masses results in changes in weather conditions MS-ESS2-6. Develop and use a model to describe how unequal heating and rotation of the Earth cause patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates Several educational resources have been utilized in an effort to gain the knowledge for making suggestions for the collection. These resources include Titlewave.com, a Follett library resource, Childrens Core Collection and Middle and Junior High Core Collection databases delivered by EBCSO, as well as information found on retail bookseller sites, such as Barnes and Noble and Amazon. In addition, reviews by Booklist and School Library Journal were also consulted. Each of the six goals for the MS-ESS2 Earths Systems section of the NGSS has between four to nine suggestions for new materials for even distribution across the topics. The majority of the collection material suggestions are traditional books, as we do not have the resources to procure ebooks as of yet. In addition, I have also suggested 2 DVDs that offer information on the water cycle, as well as a two beautiful reference books titled, The Encyclopedia of Weather and Climate Change: a Complete Visual Guide by Juliane L. Fry, Hans F. Graf, Richard Grotjahn, and Clive Saunders and Atlas of the World published by National Geographic. While these reference books are on the more expensive side, I feel they will address several NGSSs with one resource and offer the student a fantastic visual when studying weather Fairless 2
and climate change and the terrains of the different continents. I anticipate having the option to preview these resources before I make any final commitments. In total, the number of new resources that will be acquired with the proposed budget of $1500 will be 39 new materials for the middle school library. The attached annotated bibliography for the suggested resources can be found at the end of this proposal, and have a combined cost of $1489.52. In addition to the annotated bibliography, each suggestion offers the recommended grade levels the resource will serve, as well and the individual cost of the resource. While purchasing new resources can be a strain on any budget, I feel that strengthening the science resources will provide support for the Next Generation Science Standards our teachers are introducing in our new curriculum.

4. Fry, Juliane L., Hans-F Graf, Richard Grotjahn, and Clive Saunders. The Encyclopedia of Weather and Climate Change: a Complete Visual Guide. Berkeley, Calif.: University of California Press, 2010. Grades 5 6 7 8 $258.17 Despite the inadequacies of the temperature measurement network, there is little doubt that much of the Earth has been undergoing a moderate warming since about the start of the 20th century, although this warming has been more pronounced in some areas, and it wavered in mid-century. A critical question facing mankind is: Has this global warming been primarily due to natural fluctuations (e.g. increases in total solar irradiance (TSI) coupled to positive feedback effects, changes in ocean heat Fairless 11
transport flows, or other variations) or anthropogenic impacts (primarily greenhouse gas production)? Global warming alarmists believe that the increases in 20th century temperatures are mainly due to increases in greenhouse gases and offer the "hockey stick" picture of global temperature history as evidence of the uniqueness of the 20th century. Nay-sayers dispute these predictions, claiming that the recent rise in temperature has significant regional exceptions, and is likely to be just another in a series of natural fluctuations in climate, not associated with greenhouse gases. They place little faith in climate models, and claim that the "hockey stick" picture of global temperature history is a "fraud" approaching the dimensions of cold fusion. Published books on global warming and climate change tend to reflect the views of either the alarmists or the nay-sayers. They often start with the conclusion and then attempt to build the case by selecting or analyzing the data to support their thesis, e.g. global warming as a great threat or global warming as a fiction. In this book Donald Rapp attempts to assess the evidence in an objective way. Although he is not a climate scientist by profession, very few climate scientists have taken a broad systems view of the problem of global warming. Donald Rapp is a professional systems engineer, having taught in universities for 14 years and with over 25 years' experience managing various programs for NASA. His experience has required the ability to move into a highly technical field, assimilate the content, organize the knowledge base and succinctly describe the field, its content, its unresolved issues and achievements. This is precisely what Donald Rapp does in this book in relation to global climate change. As such his approach is refreshingly different.
5. Pittock, A. Barrie. Climate Change: Turning up the Heat. Sterling, VA: Routledge, 2005. Grades 5 6 7 8 $40.00 Is climate change really happening and does it matter? The answer from the scientific community is a resounding yes, yet debates about the reality of climate change and what measures to take are slowing our response. Barrie Pittock, one of the world's leading climate researchers, argues that we need to act urgently to avoid increasingly severe climate change. He looks at the controversy around global warming and other predicted changes, examining the scientific basis of the changes observed to date, how they relate to natural variations and why the evidence points to larger changes later this century. The effect of these changes on our natural systems and our lifestyles will be considerable and could include wild weather, shifts in global ocean circulation, decreases in crop yields and sea-level rises. But the impacts won't be distributed evenly: some countries will suffer more than others.Climate Change: Turning up the Heat explains how our attitudes to risk and uncertainty constant companions in life influence our decision making and, ultimately, how much we and future generations stand to lose from rapid climate change. It outlines the current concerns of the major international players and reviews the response to date, detailing national interests. Importantly, it shows there is real hope of managing climate change and minimising the risk of disaster if we step up efforts to develop and apply innovative technological and policy solutions.
6. Climate Central. Global Weirdness: Severe Storms, Deadly Heat Waves, Relentless Drought, Rising Seas and the Weather of the Future. New York: Pantheon, 2012. In fifty easy-to-read entries, Climate Central tackles basic questions such as: Fairless 12
-Is climate ever normal? -Why and how do fossil-fuel burning and other human practices produce greenhouse gases? -What natural forces have caused climate change in the past? -What risks does climate change pose for human health? -What accounts for the diminishment of mountain glaciers and small ice caps around the world since 1850? -What are the economic costs and benefits of reducing carbon emissions? Illustrated throughout with clarifying graphics, Global Weirdness enlarges our understanding of how climate change affects our daily lives, and arms us with the incontrovertible facts we need to make informed decisions about the future of the planet, and of humankind.
7. Cullen, Heidi. The Weather of the Future: Heat Waves, Extreme Storms, and Other Scenes from a Climate-Changed Planet. Reprint ed. United States: Harper Perennial, 2011. Grades 5 6 7 8 Dr. Heidi Cullen, one of the world's foremost climatologists and environmental journalists, offers a new way of viewing the climate-change phenomenon, not as some future event but as something happening right now in our own backyard. In this groundbreaking, provocative work, Dr. Cullen combines the latest scientific research with state-of-the-art climate-model projections to create climate-change scenarios for seven of the most at-risk locations around the globe. From the Central Valley of California, where coming droughts will jeopardize the entire state's water supply, to New York City, whose infrastructure is extremely vulnerable to even a relatively weak Category 3 hurricane, to Greenland, where warmer temperatures will give access to mineral wealth buried beneath ice sheets for millennia, Cullen illustrates how, if left unabated, climate change will transform every corner of the world by midcentury'and no two regions will be affected in quite the same way.
8. Sohn, Emily, and Erin Ash Sullivan. Weather and the Water Cycle: Will It Rain? Chicago, Ill.: Norwood House Press, 2012. Grades 4 5 6 7 $23.94 People want to predict the weather for many reasons.
