DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY
Example: 4(X + 2)= 28
First in this equation you have to distribute 4(x + 2) which would
be 4x + 8= 28
Now your problem is set up to solve
You minus the 8 on both side to balance the equation out. so
8-8=0 and is canceled out and 28-8=20.
4x=20
Now you divide 4x on both sides and the answer is 5.

ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY
Example: (6 + x) + 16
To nd the answer for associative property all you have to do is
move the parentheses around to a different part of the equation
Answer: (6 + x) + 16= 6 + (x +16)

COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY
example: 624
When nding the commutative property all you have to do is to
change the order of the equation
answer: 624=426

SIMPLIFYING AN EXPRESSION
example: 4(7x-3) + 2x
First, when you see the parentheses you have to distribute. To
distribute you have to times the 4 and 7x and the 4 times 3. So
then the equation simplies down to 28x-12 + 2x. Now, you have
to combine like terms. In this case, the like terms are 28x and 2x.
28x +2x= 30x
30x -12
the simplied answer for this expression is 30x-12
Soja, Caroline Tuesday, November 19, 2013 9:52:28 AM Pacic Standard Time 70:56:81:b0:00:25
example: 7x - 10 - 9x = -13
The rst step to solve this equation is to combine the variables
7x-9x=-2x
Now the problem is simplied down to -2x-10 = -13
Then, you have to take the -10 and add the -10 to the other side of the equation of -13
-13 + 10= 3
The equation is -2x=-3 now you have to divide -2 into -2x and -3,
-2x/2= x and -3/-2
-3/-2 is an improper factions so you have to divide -3 into -2
the answer is 1 1/2
STEPS TO SOLVE 7x - 10 -9x = -13
Soja, Caroline Tuesday, November 19, 2013 9:52:28 AM Pacic Standard Time 70:56:81:b0:00:25
First you have to nd a common denominator that will t into 3,2,6 which is 6. then you have to
times each fraction of the equation by 6/1
5x/6 6/1 = 5x, x/3 6/1= 2x, 1/2 6/1=3, and 11/6 6/1=11
The problem simplies down to 5x + 2x - 3 = 11
Now you have to combine 5x and 2x which equals 7x
7x - 3 = 11
Then, you have to add 3 to the other side of the equation which is 11. So, 11 + 3 = 14. Dont
forget that the 3 that you had to get rid of on the rst side of the equation gets canceled out. The
problem is now 7x =11. Then you have to divide 7 on both sides. 7x/7=0 or canceled out, 14/7=
2.
Therefor, the answer is 2
STEPS TO SOLVE 5x/6 + x/3 -1/2 = 11/6

SOLVING AND GRAPHING THE INEQUALITY
2 ! X/5
when looking at this equation, the variable is divided by 5. To solve this, you would have to do the
opposite of what the variable is divided by. So you would times. Take the denominator of the
fraction and times it by that number on the fraction and the 2.
x/-5 -5 = x
2 -5 = -10
the solved equation is -10 ! x
this could be switch around to make it easier to graph x " -10

OPEN AND CLOSED CIRCLES WHEN GRAPHING
INEQUALITIES ON A NUMBER LINE
When graphing inequalities on a number line, there always has
to be symbols to show which numbers and variable of the
equation are great than, less than, at most, or at least. When you
graph this, and open circle represents less than or greater than.
When using the closed circle, it means the equation used the
symbols at most or at least.
at most! at least "
