Properties
Distributive
2(32) = 2(30 +2) = 2(30)+2(2) = 64
The distributive property lets you multiply a sum by multiplying each addend separately,
and then add the products.
Associative
(1 + 2) + 3 = 1+ (2 + 3) = 6
6 (9 x 4) = (6 x 9) x 4 = 21
The Associative property lets you swap the numbers and still get the same answer.

Properties
Commutative
2 + 3 = 3 + 2
2 x 3 = 3 x 2
The commutative property allows you to change number placements and still get the same
answer.

Simplifying Multi-step
Equations
To simplify 4(7x - 3) + 2x you would
start with the distributive property
4(7x - 3) = 4 x 7x - 4 x 3 = 28x - 12 so
now the equation is 16x + 2x.
Now combine the variables, the anwer
is 18x.

Solving Multi-step
Equations
To solve 7x - 10 - 9x = -13 you rst have
to combine the like terms
9x - 7x = 2x so now the new equation is
2x - 10 = -13, so now add 10 to -13.
You now have 2x = -3 so dived -3 by 2
and you get -1.5, so x = -1.5

Solving Multi-step
Equations
To solve 5x/6 + x/3 - 1/2 = 11/6 you
rst have to make all the denominators
the same.
So make all the denominators 6, 3 x 2 is
6 and 2 x 3 is 6. Now that all
denominators are alike you can take
them away.

Part 2
Remember what ever you do to the
denominator you have to do to the
numerator, so now the new equation is
5x + 2x - 3 = 11
Now combine the like terms so now its
7x - 3 = 11, now add three, now its 7x =
14, divide 7 into 14 and x = 2.

Solving and Graphing
To solve 2 is less then or equal to x/-5
you rst multiply -5 by 2 and you get
-10 so x is greater or equal to -10. This is
how you graph it.
-10 0

When graphing inequalities a open
circle means that the variable is nn
greater or less then the number.
When graphing inequalities a closed
circle represents that the variable is
either greater, less than or equal to.

Word Problems
Chris wants buy a bicycle that costs
$160. If she saves $12/week, what is
the fewest number of weeks she must
save to buy the bicycle?
12/160 = 13.3 = 14 x 13 =182
She must save 14 weeks

Part 2
Mark worked on math homework less
then 1/3 the amount the amount of the
time that his brother did. If Mark spent
25 minutes on his math homework,
how much time did his brother spend
on his math homework?
25/3 = 8.3 = 8.4 x 3 = 25.2
Marks brother spent 8.4 minutes.

Part 3
One third of a number, decreased by
thirty-six, is at most twenty-two. Find
the number.
1/3x v - 36 at most 22
36 + 22 = 58
58 / 1/3 = 174 - 36 = 22
x = 174
